Molecular Biology & Genetics:
New Program Description.
"The Department offers MSc and PhD programs in genetics and related areas of cell and molecular biology with emphasis on molecular genetics and cytogenetics particularly as they apply to genetic recombination and expression, embryonic development and biotechnology.
In addition to a research thesis, four courses are normally required for the MSc degree and a further two courses for the PhD. Students must also register for one semester of course 400-6000, take part in the departmental seminars program on a continuing basis, and present a formal seminar on their thesis research."
Previously:
The MSc program and the PhD program provide for emphasis in cytology, molecular biology and genetics.
Normally a thesis will be required to complete the program for the MSc, but the Department may allow certain students to complete the program by course work.
The Department participates in the Interdepartmental Groups in Biophysics and Genetics.

Summary of C.O.D. Meeting Q~~~~~~~_Z~_!~~~ ________ _
1. The Chairman reported that the new Secretary of State, the Hon. Walter McLean is sympathetic to the financial plight of Canadian universities, llaowever, he warned universities that the EPF transfer for post secondary education was under review in terms of its size and the method of the transfer.
2. Council received a report from Professor Van Fossen (the COU Liaison person on OSIS) on the progress of the development of OACs. While a number of the cirriculum guidelines were near to completion, others were still a year away from being finalized.
3. Council received a report from the Sub Committee on Province-Wide Examinations and Tests. This report is the outcome of the Minister's statement last year that Ontario would proceed with some form of province-wide testing for final year secondary school students. The report calls for testing in Mathematics, French, and English and that such tests be conducted in conjunction with OACs. The results of such a test would be included on the student's transcript separately and also averaged with the corresponding OAC grade.
After discussion of the matter, the Report was approved by Council.
4. Council received a verbal report from Dr. Armstrong, chairman of the COD Distance Education Committee on the Committee's progress to date. A major objective is the compilation of all distance education courses in the province and production of a calendar. The first part of this objective has been achieved. Another pUIlpose of the Committee is to identify areas of education which are not covered by distance education courses and encourage universities to develop such courses. This is now underway.
5. Council accepted the auditors' report covering COU operations for 1983-4.
6. COD has initiated a forum for inter-university discussion of matters related to mandatory retirement.
7. Council met with the new Deputy Minister, Dr. George Podrebarac. Several issues related to the universities were discussed. On the question of funding and the formula next year, Dr. Podrebarac could give no details at this time. There was a discussion of recent research funding initiatives on the part of government. It was pointed out that while such funding is welcomed, the basic structures needed to do the research are in need of repair and renovation. The final topic was the Bovey Commission. It was the Deputy Minister's opinion that the Minister would likely act on at least some of the recommendations of the Commission.
