Drawing Hair, Part 2: Final Drawings and Critiques

Here are my final drawings for the hair assignment. I used my friend, Michelle Castellanos, as my hair model:

I was a lot happier with my drawings this week, especially in relation to the work of other students. Unfortunately I didn’t get to take a photograph of everyone else’s work, but I definitely did not feel like I had totally missed the point of the assignment and that everyone else knew what was going on while I did not. Nevertheless, I don’t think my drawings are absolutely beautiful and I think I have ample room to improve.

As we were looking at everyone’s artworks, one thing my professor mentioned that I had never thought about was the frame of the drawing, and how that affects the overall artwork. One student had made a square frame for his drawing, and it actually made the design a lot more interesting than it would have been had he chosen a rectangle.

He also warned people of making drawings with objects very close to the edge of the frame without letting the frame crop the object or giving more space between the frame edge and the object. This creates unnecessary tension, according to him. I’m not sure if I agree with him completely, because sometimes the closeness works and other times it does not.

On my drawings specifically, the play of various patterns reminded my professor of Matisse, which was an interesting comment to me. I think I can see that variety of pattern that he’s talking about and I know that as I was making the drawing I was conscious of the number of different patterns I was engaging with.
