Come Thou Come Thou Long-Expected JesusLong-Expected Jesus

#254 ELW#254 ELW

Come, thou long expected Jesus,

Born to set thy people free; From our fears and sins release

us;Let us find our rest in thee.

Israel’s strength and consolation,Hope of all the earth thou art,Dear desire of every nation,Joy of every longing heart.

Joy to those who long to see thee,

Day-spring from on high appear

Come thou promised Rod of Jesse, of thy birth we long to

hear

O’er the hills the angels singing news glad tidings of a birth

Go to him, your praises bringing, Christ the Lord has come to

earth.

Come to earth to taste our sadness,He whose glories knew no end

By His life He brings us gladness,Our Redeemer, Shepherd, Friend

Leaving riches without number,Born within a cattle stall,

This the everlasting wonder,Christ was born the Lord of all.

Born thy people to deliver,Born a child and yet a king;Born to reign in us forever,

Now thy gracious kingdom bring.

By thine own eternal SpiritRule in all our hearts alone;By thine all sufficient merit

Raise us to thy glorious throne.

~Prayer of Confession~ P: Merciful God, we bring before you these things in our worship and in our lives which cause you pain. Straighten out the areas in our lives which hinder people from discerning your way, O God.

All: Smooth the rough edges of our witness so that anything which prevents people from hearing your word is cleared away.

P: Many people walk through shadowed valleys at this time, weighed down by painful, recycled memories.

All: Forgive us when we fail to become involved with the needs of others by pleading seasonal busy-ness.

P: Advent God, you call on us to prepare the way for Jesus’ birth and yet each year it seems that we spend more time making preparations for our own pleasure rather than preparing for Jesus to be born anew in our hearts and lives, in our families, our communities, our nation, our world.

All: Forgive us for getting so involved in partying, buying gifts, ordering food, writing cards that we have no energy left to celebrate the reason for such activity – the birth of Jesus Christ.

P: Help us, O God, to prepare ourselves faithfully and sincerely to receive the Christ-child.

All: Amen!

Assurance of Forgiveness P: The apostle Paul prayed that our love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help us determine what is best, so that in the day of Christ we may be pure and blameless. Jesus Christ was sent by God into the world, not to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Those who believe in him are not condemned.

All: Thanks be to God!

ADVENT CANDLE LIGHTINGADVENT CANDLE LIGHTING

P: The second candle of Advent is the light of Peace. ALL: Amidst the terror and threats of war in our world, the Light of Christ is a small beacon of peace shining in the gloominess, driving away our fear.

P: We light this candle today to remind us that Christ is the Prince of Peace.

ALL: He is the One promised from the beginning of the world; the One whose birth, life, death and resurrection will bring lasting and eternal peace to all people. We thank God for the hope he gives us and for the peace he bestows.

Your Little Ones Dear LordYour Little Ones Dear Lord#286 ELW

Your little ones, dear Lord, are we,and come your lowly bed to see;enlighten ev'ry soul and mind,

that we the way to you may find.

With songs we hasten you to greet, and kiss the ground before your feet.Oh, blessed hour, oh, sweetest night

that gave you birth, our soul's delight.

Oh, draw us wholly to you, Lord, and to us all your grace accord;true faith and love to us impart,

that we may hold you in our heart.

Until at last we too proclaim,with all your saints, your glorious name;

in paradise our songs renew, and praise you as the angels do.

The Angel Gabriel from Heaven Came

#265 ELW

The angel Gabriel from heaven came,

with wings as driftedsnow, with eyes as flame:

"All hail to thee, O Lowly maiden Mary,

most highly favored lady."

Gloria!

"For know a blessedmother thou shalt be,all generations laud

and honor thee;thy son shall be

Emmanuel,by seers foretold,

most highly favored lady."

Gloria!

Then gentle Marymeekly bowed her head;"To me be as it pleaseth

God,“ she said."My soul shall laud and

magnify God's holy name."

Most highly favored lady,

Gloria!

Of her, Emmanuel, the Christ,

was born in Bethlehem, all on a Christmas morn,

and Christian folk Throughout the world

will ever say:"Most highly

favored lady." Gloria!

Oh Day of Peace

#711 ELW

O day of peace that dimly shines through all our hopes

and prayers and dreams, guide us to justice, truth, and love, delivered from

our selfish schemes.

May swords of hate fall from our hands, our hearts from

envy find release, till by God’s grace our warring world shall see

Christ’s promised reign of peace.

Then shall the wolf dwell with the lamb,

nor shall the fierce devour the small;

as beasts and cattle calmly graze,

a little child shall lead them all.

Then enemies shall learn to love,

all creatures find their true accord;

The hope of peace shall be fulfilled,

for all the earth shall know the Lord.

Comfort, Comfort Now My People

#256 ELW

"Comfort, comfort now my people;tell of peace!" So says our God.

Comfort those who sit in darknessmourning under sorrow's load.

To God's people now proclaimthat God's pardon waits for them!

Tell them that their war is over;God will reign in peace forever.

For the herald's voice is cryingin the desert far and near,

calling us to true repentance, since the reign of God is here.

Oh, that warning cry obey! Now prepare for God a way.

Valleys, rise to greet the Savior;hills, bow down in humble favor.

Straight shall be what long was crooked,

and the rougher places plain.Let your hearts be true and humble,

as befits God's holy reign.

For the glory of the Lordnow on earth is shed abroad,

and all flesh shall see the tokenthat God's word is never broken.
