Recap of the community panel process and purpose:• Meeting 1

– become familiar with the site– understand the key recommendations of the draft master plan and opportunities – hear about and discuss current development proposals in the area– identify additional information required for decision making.

• Meeting 2 (tonight) – EPSDD staff to summarise and report back on issues raised at meeting 1.– hear presentations that provide additional information on individual development

proposals. – use this additional information to discuss and consider different options for

development in the area that will achieve the best possible outcomes for the centre and the community.

• Meeting 3 – agree on a draft development option to take to the broader community.

The Curtin Garden Group

Who are we?• Borne out of community interest• Started in 2011-12; worked with TAMS/City

Services to revitalise square (wren, ceramics, noticeboard etc);

• The nucleus of the group organised the Curtin Turns 50 celebrations

• Support landscapes that enhance the whole centre and flow into the rest of Curtin

• We are a cohesive, committed and energised group with a track record

• We engage with our community

The John Curtin Memorial Garden was run down and overgrown with ivy.

The Garden was intended to be a feature garden -attractive and accessible,

commemorating one of our great Prime Ministers

This community-based endeavour was achieved through plenty of commitment and fundraising; and support from

government, TAMs, local citizens and businesses

Now the Garden is a relaxing and welcoming entry to Curtin, providing good visibility of the commemorative

stone wall. A well loved community space.

Why we love our Curtin shops

Our vision• To maintain and improve the amenity of the Curtin

shops and surrounds with a focus on the gardens and public spaces

• To engage and work with the community• To create community spaces, connected in a coherent

way, in keeping with Curtin’s design• The Draft Master Plan of the Curtin Group Centre forms

the blueprint for centre's future development. Group will contribute to the Plan's finalisation and implementation

• Take opportunities to work with the redevelopment

The Radburn Model• Curtin was designed in the 1960’s just as garden

city urban designs were becoming popular in the US

• The Radburn model intended to create pedestrian-friendly, residential housing with all the homes facing on to a shared green space with no back fences (implemented in only 4 suburbs)

• The local shops and schools could be reached using paths and underpasses without crossing a road

• There was a focus on shared and safe green spaces

What we would like to see• We want to see designs that are to scale, that are

in keeping with the Curtin precinct and complement the existing avenues and spaces

• A human scale and village feel• Free-flowing, safe, aesthetically pleasing

connections between the shopping centre, the streets and parklands

• A landscaped entry to the suburb• We want considered design for the future –

taking into account demographics, accessibility and amenity

Why improve the natural surrounds?Nature correlates with:• Greater physical

activity• Opportunities for

socialising• Building social

networks• Escape from routine

and demands

Contact with nature has been shown to• Reduce stress, improve attention, have a positive

• and... higher levels of greenness in neighbourhoods has been shown to reduce chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, high blood pressure and cholesterol

Environmental benefits

• Improved air quality • Maintaining a wildlife corridor • Combat urban heat – large trees reduce the

temperature by 2 - 8 degrees Celcius

In summary

• We are a community group with established credentials and community buy in

• There are many great features about Curtin and the shops that we would like to maintain and enhance

• However, we want to make sure that any new developments take into account the need for landscapes to integrate with the whole of the centre and to consider the “flow” of spaces into the rest of Curtin
