When an object undergoes acceleration, its velocity changes.

Acceleration the rate at which velocity changes over time; an object accelerates if its speed, direction, or both change.

Acceleration can be a change in speed or a change in direction.

When an object undergoes acceleration, its velocity changes.

Positive acceleration is in the same direction as the motion and increases velocity.

The basketball player accelerates at 5 m/s/s upward.

Linear Acceleration When an object slows down it is

losing speed. This is called Negative Acceleration or Deceleration.

This is really acceleration in the backward direction.

Moving in a circle at constant speed is acceleration because you are constantly changing direction.

The acceleration that occurs in a circular motion is known as centripetal acceleration.

Stock cars are constantly accelerating

around the track.

Equation acceleration = final velocity – initial velocity

time

what does this mean?

Or a = v tUnits of acceleration: m/s/s, m/s2 , km/h/s, mi/hr/s

The average acceleration over a given time interval can be calculated by dividing the change in the object’s velocity by the time over which the change occurs.

Natalie accelerates her skateboard along a straight path from 0 m/s to 4.0 m/s in 2.5 s. Find her average acceleration

List what you know : Plug into your

equation

Final velocity = 4.0 m/s a= Vfinal - Vinitial /

time

Initial velocity = 0 m/s 4.0 m/s – 0 m/sTime = 2.5 s 2.5 s

Practice Calculating Acceleration

1. If Annie goes from 0m/s to 8 m/s in 1 sec. What is her acceleration?

2. Tanner ran 0m/s to 10m/s in 1 sec. What is his acceleration?

3. Sam’s new Mercedes goes from 0m/s to 30 m/s in 6 sec. What is its acceleration?

4. Catlin’s jet accelerates from a stop to 76 m/s in 10 sec. What is its acceleration?

The top fuel cars are traveling 298.1 mph in 3.055 seconds, what is their acceleration?

What is the acceleration at 3 seconds?

What is the acceleration at 8 seconds?
