The qualifications gained at the Cut Above Academy are first-class credentials in creative image making. Our courses offer everything our students need to know about hairdressing, beauty services, and makeup artistry - and they are all approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).
Hairdressing graduates can achieve Level 3 and 4 certificates in hairdressing, beauty graduates can achieve nationally and internationally recognised Level 4 and 5 certificates or diploma qualifications; and makeup and FX artists achieve Level 3, 4 or 5 certificates.
We are the only NZ academy offering such a range of approved Level 5 courses in one place. Need more convincing? Industry experts endorse our courses, our NZQA education review was shining, and the success stories of our graduates and our commitment to progressive training and providing industry connections guarantees the quality of our qualification.
All that sounds expensive, right? No problem - all courses are authorised for government funding, meaning you can qualify for student loans and allowances.
Cut Above academy students have the tools to do it all. Today’s creative workforce needs to be multi skilled. Hair salon and beauty clinic owners want operators with extra skills in makeup or nail artistry. Stage and screen producers, and art directors want makeup artists who can style hair, assist with costumes and props, and create special effects.
On top of what you’ll learn in your chosen specialty, we include basics from our other courses - so you can be an all-rounder and have an advantage when it comes to getting work. Our extensive syllabus lets you add extra skills to your CV as a part-time option or you can enrol in a related field at the end of your course.
Our focus is on practical, hands on tuition. Students work on clients in the Academy salons and gain confidence, real world experience, and contacts through opportunities working as backstage crew on some of NZ’s most exciting fashion and performing arts events.

Our FX students also work on professional stage and screen products as part of their course.
The future continues to look bright for Cut Above students. The academy is the driving force in creative image education, launching more graduates into the work force than any other institute in our field. Each year around 700 students qualify in hairdressing, beauty, makeup artistry and special effects.
