WRITING SECTION
Measures your ability to understand academic English
Consists of 2 tasks:
Integrated task
Time: 20 min.
Independent writing taskTime: 30 min.
Independent academic writing task
Refers to essays that express and support the student’s point of view
Task:
Students have to compose an essay for 30 minutes, at least 300 words
To answer you must state, explain, and support an opinion
Evaluation
No right or wrong questions
You are scored on:
Essay organizationDevelopment of ideasAccuracy of language
Essay organization
Any academic essay should consist of
3 parts:
Introduction (4-5 sentences)
Body (90 % of an essay)
Conclusion (3-4 sentences)
A more detailed essay structure
Development of ideas
Ideas in essay should be properly supported and developed.
This means that you should use statistics, data or personal experience to prove that what you’re writing is true.
Accuracy of language
Language in an essay should be academic and grammatically correct.
The writer should not use contractions
(can’t= can not), spoken idioms (let’s hang out), jargon and slang words.
Strategies to Use for Building Writing Fluency
1) Practice writing in English on a computer keyboard;
2) Practice writing essays;3) Practice organizing information in written form;4) Practice paraphrasing and summarizing
information in written form;5) Read and listen to material you will encounter on
the test;6) Increase your skills in using a variety of
sentence structures and vocabulary;7) Pay attention to time ;8) ATTEND PREPARATORY TOEFL
