Sibel Tanrıverdi

Assessing your academic skills

• Understanding lectures in English (Key words)• Take good notes• Taking part in group work• Giving presentations• Reading academic tests (High value parts)• Finding information to include in my own writing

(Reference lists)• Writing essays (Read & Imitate)• Summarising what I have read• Learning academic vocabulary (passive→active)

How can you improve your weaknesses?

• If you arrive late to a lecture, you shouldn’t enter the room.

• If your mobile phone goes off in class, you should go out of the room to answer it.

• If your lecturer says something you don’t understand, you should ask them to explain.

• You will get all the information you need yo pass exams in the course lectures, so you only need to do extra reading if you are aiming for excellent marks.

• Textbooks are written by experts so you can accept what you read in them as true.

• If you are having difficulties writing an essay, you should go to your tutor for help.

• To help you understand what is needed in academic writing, you should look at the

texts (e.g.Essays, dissertations) of past students.

• You will get good marks for an essay if you can show you support your tutor’s opinion on the subject.
