The department of Production Engineering was established in the year 1964 and since its inception, it has been trying to impart quality education to undergraduates and train them to meet the demands of the manufacturing industry.
The department has established links with the industries, R&D organizations, consultancy organizations and academic institutes in the region in furtherance of the cause of manufacturing engineering.
The department sees itself as a pathfinder of emerging technologies and techniques in the area of production engineering and develops students to be technologically and managerially sound to meet the challenges of the open market in the present era of globalization.
1
The main objective of production engineering is the integration of technology with management in planning and controlling the design, development and operation of manufacturing system.
The department offers a four-year undergraduate course in Production Engineering and two postgraduate courses in Production Engineering and Automated Manufacturing Systems.

Other Major Setups
Flexible Manufacturing System and Robotics -
The FMS lab provides excellent facility, equipment, and information systems for hardware-based experiments, computer-based modeling, simulation, analysis and education.
VMC 800M 5-axis Machining Center -
The machine is one of latest innovations in machining industry. This machine is used for machining extremely sophisticated geometries. This machine is widely used in defense and automobile sector.
Wire EDM -
A sophisticated Indian make Maxi cut wire EDM machine has been installed in the non- traditional manufacturing laboratory. This computer controlled machine has the ability to process hardened materials efficiently and with high accuracy.
Laser Cutting and Welding Machine -
Laser technology is making its mark in modern manufacturing because of its extreme precision and flexibility in design and material. One laser-processing machine set has been mounted in the nontraditional laboratory of the department. The machine can be used for welding, drilling, cutting, cladding, hardening, of different materials and composites.
Water Jet Machining -
A full-fledged hydraulically controlled abrasive water jet machine has been installed in the department of Production Engineering funded under the AICTE project. This machine is suitable for cutting hard material and very soft material. In future the system will be developed as a cutting tool for Indian mining industry.

Students
Notwithstanding the tight academic schedule, the students indulge in various extra-curricular activities and clubs. They are also pretty aware of the environmental crisis and are part of EPAC (Environment Protection and Awareness Club) to do their bit in saving the earth. The students also hold on to their hobbies by joining cultural clubs, like the Dramatics Society, the Literary Society, the Music Club, the Dance Club, which conduct various fun events throughout the year, keeping the students engaged in the frolic.
They remain actively involved in organizing our cultural fest BITOTSAV and technical fest PANTHEON.
The students apart from extra-curricular clubs also have a host of technical clubs and teams to hone their classroom knowledge practically and competing with the world, bringing laurels to BIT.

Internships
The students have in them a varied sense of understanding in the current methods and operating procedures by the help of subsequent internships during the semester and winter breaks. In order to facilitate the students with new advancements, the department also ensures industrial visits over the period of the semester, so that the students are convinced by practical means of the theoretical sorts.

Student Projects
All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV): FIREBOLT RACING consists of automotive enthusiasts that strive to make an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) capable of conquering the harshest of terrains. They participate in two national level ATV Racing Events namely Baja Student India and BAJA SAE India.
Firebolt Racing was one of India's first two teams to implement CVT type transmission. It was appreciated by many judges including Late Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam.
Formula style race car: SRIJAN is a team of 40 engineering students who design and fabricate a formula style race car in our college and participate in Formula Student Events held in various countries.
Formula SAE is a student design competition organized by SAE International. The competition exposes students to a real world engineering experience and enables them to solve challenges faced by the automobile industries.
Electric All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV): TEAM AVEON RACING consists of automotive enthusiasts that strive to make an Electric All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) capable of conquering the harshest of terrains.
They participate in a national level ATV Racing Events namely Electric- Baja in which electric ATVs are pitted from all over the country.
