Changing the world, one person at a time!
Latest estimates suggest that Autism now affects 1 in 68 individuals. First responders and law enforcement personnel are an integral part of our community. They respond to emergency situations on a daily basis, often times in a voluntary capacity.
Although this segment is trained to respond to emergency situations using a certain practice, this may not be effective when responding to situations involving person on the Autism Spectrum and other cognitive disabilities.
Often, first responders are not knowledgeable about Autism or know what to expect during a typical interaction.
This training program will teach a basic working knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorder and what first responders can expect to see and do in these emergency situations.

You receive a call from a grocer of an adult male in the store arguing loudly with a female. It seems the female is trying to calm him down. The storekeeper is getting nervous and so are the customers.
You arrive and speak to the male but he is not making eye contact, is flapping his hands and ignoring your requests to produce ID. He starts to bolt. When you try to apprehend him, he hits and strikes you. The female companion is trying to get your attention, to tell you to stop, but you don’t hear her. You use your Taser and the male is taken into custody.
As it turns out, this person has Autism and was in the store with his therapist learning how to shop for groceries. He was having a meltdown due to sensory input. The therapist was aiding him in regaining his composure and could have acted as a resource in securing a successful outcome for all involved.

Without properly trained employees, staff are left open to human rights complaints and civil litigation. Successful litigation could cost millions of
dollars, impact staff morale; cause negative media attention; create loss of confidence from the community and pain and suffering for all those
involved.
