Before 1316, the summer solstice was called Ukon juhla, ("Ukko's

celebration") after the Finnish god Ukko. In Karelian tradition, many

bonfires were burned side by side, the biggest of which was called Ukko-

kokko (the "bonfire of Ukko"). After the celebrations were Christianized,

the holiday became known as juhannus after John the Baptist (Finnish:

Johannes Kastaja).

Kajaani's Raatihuone is in cultural history very valuable building. It is the oldest house which is preserved in the center. Building is Empirestyleand wood made, and construction completed 1831. Kainuu region has its own type of talkkuna.

Kajaani University of Applied Sciences (Kajaanin ammattikorkeakoulu,

KAMK) is university of applied sciences located in the town of Kajaani.

There are approximately 2000 students and 230 members of staff at

KAMK.

The organizational structure of KAMK are based on five different areas

which are: Business and Innovations, Information Systems, Nursing and

Healthcare, Mechanical and Mining Engineering and Activity Tourism.

Vuolijoki Church is build in 1905-1906 and it was designed by Josef

Stenbäck. It’s only stonechurch in Kainuu. Vuolijoki is located 50 km

west of Kajaani.

Student Restaurant foX is located in TIETO2-building. The restaurant is

open from Monday to Friday 7.30-14.30.

Lunch costs 2,25/2,60€ for student and 6,90€ for outsider. Food is very healthy

and nutritious. We recommend foX for everyone!

Yleisradio as known as YLE is finnish national TV and radio channel. It

produces all kind of programs, for example sportsnews, regular news and

nature documents. YLE has become famous for popular sportreporters such

as Antero Mertaranta, Inka Helenius, Laura Ruohola and Tapio ”Tapsa”

Suominen.

YLE has own radio channel in Kajaani and it’s called Radio Yle Kainuu.

Zumba is a dance fitness program created by Colombian dancer and

choreographer Alberto "Beto" Perez during the 1990s.

Approximately 14 million people take weekly Zumba classes in over

140,000 locations across more than 185 countries.

We have H & H Dance House in Kajaani which provides Zumba lessons

for all kind of people. It’s located in town down Kajaani.

Åbo is Swedish name for the Finnish city Turku. Turku was Finland’s capital city

before Helsinki in 1808-1812.

Turku has become famous for Turku’s cathedral, river called Aurajoki which flows

throught the city and many popular ice hockey players for example Saku Koivu,

Mikko Koivu and Antero Niittymäki.

Turku is located on the Finnish west coast near to Helsinki.
