Ken Herman is the Austin American-Statesman's Metro columnist who reports on everything fromcolonoscopies toPresidential campaigns.He isaPulitzer Prizewinning journalistwhobeganhiscareerin1975atTheLufkinDailyNewsinEastTexas.In1977,Mr.HermanwonaPulitzerPrizeforPublicServiceforaseriesofstories intheLufkinNewsinvestigatingthedeathofayoungrecruitintheU.S.military.Theseriesledtocongressionalhearingsandchanges inAmericanmilitaryrecruitingpractices.Mr.Herman joinedTheAssociatedPress inDallas in1977.LaterheworkedforAP inHarlingenandAustin.In1988hebecameAustinBureauChiefforTheHoustonPost.WhenthePostfolded in1995(nothisfault),Herman joinedtheAustinAmerican-StatesmanasCapitolBureauChief.In2001,aftercoveringGeorgeW.Bush’spresidentialcampaign,HermanwenttoWashingtonforasix-monthstintasCoxNewspapers'WhiteHousecorrespondent.HereturnedtoAustininJune2001toresumecoveringstate government and politics. In June 2004, he returned to Washington to cover the Bush re-electioncampaign. FromJanuary2005 throughFebruary2009hewasCoxNewspapers'WhiteHousecorrespondent.Now,backinAustin,Mr.Hermanwritesawide-rangingcolumnthatsometimescoversseriouspolicytopicsandoftenuseshumortomakehispoints.Mr.Hermanwillspeaktousaboutlocal,stateandnationalpoliticalitemswithaspecialemphasisonAustin.Mr.Herman,anewspapermanthroughandthrough,willalsotalkaboutthefutureofnewspapers.

WewereexpectingasinglespeakerforourimportantfallpublicpolicymeetingonOctober10,butwhenAttorneyMarthaDickiearrived in the company of The Honorable Tim Sulak and Ms.GenevieveVanCleve,we quickly realized just how serious thetopicforthedayreallywas.Bytheendofthemeeting,wehadtheanswertothetitlequestion:“WomenandChildrenCaughtin the Middle: What’s a Courthouse Got to do with It?” Ms.Dickie, who is chair of the Travis County Civil and FamilyCourthouseCommunityFocusCommittee, showedus justhowunsafe and uncomfortable it is at the current courthouse thatwas built in 1931 when Travis County had only about 78,000residents.JudgeSulak,whopresidesoverthe353rdCivilDistrict

Court,toldussomeoftheconsequencesofnineteencourtroomsbeingsqueezedintoabuildingdesignedforthree.Andfinally,Ms.VanCleveoftheTexasWomenVoteProjectgiveusnumerousreasonswhyweshouldvoteforTheTRAVISCOUNTYBONDPROPOSITIONontheNovember3,2015,ballot.AAUWmemberspresentwere very much in favor of supporting this highly important bipartisan issue and will be reminding theiracquaintancesoftheimportanceofvotingandofvotingforthisproposition.EarlyvotingbeginsonMonday,October 19, 2015.
