The cloth ties worn by Embera women from the waist down can be washed, dried and changed multiple times daily.

Stairs Up to the House Entry To enter the raised

floor homes a log is notched as a stairway. Homes are raised about two meters (six feet) above the ground to help keep out snakes and other rain forest animals.

It also allows for more breeze to flow through homes.

Embera Girl Outside Her House Embera children and women often wear no shoes or clothing from the waist up. When in other non-embera villages they wear a T-shirt or top cloth wrap which can also be used to carry small children or other heavy loads.

Face Painting Embera Style

The dye is painted on faces, arms, hands, lower legs and feet using slivers of bamboo. Men are also painted with designs different from those for women. The dye lasts several days and with repeated applications can last for a month or more.

Cooling Off Inside an Embera Home Palm-thatched roofs

effectively block UV rays making home interiors surprisingly cool, especially when it’s breezy out. Split Caña Brava walls also allow passage of air. Bamboo flooring likewise permits airflow while silt, dust and dirt fall through to the ground below. Cleanup is quick and easy. Cooking is done on a bed of sand boxed in near one corner of the house.
