A Trip to Angora Falls

Field assignment by Jessica Martinez

The Lake Tahoe Basin

The Lake Tahoe Basin

• Started its creation approximately 230 million years ago

• The North American plate collided with the Pacific Plate, which slid under the North American plate (subduction)

• Subduction created the uplift of the Sierra Nevadas• About 25 million years ago volcanic activity and

faults were a result of the plates sliding past one another (shaped the basin)

Fallen Leaf Lake

Angora Ridge

The Formation of Fallen Leaf and The Angora Ridge

• Products of glaciation• Last know glacier of the area was about 8,000

years ago• Glaciers deposit sediment or moraines on the

outside of the bend (as do rivers)• Angora Ridge is an example of a medial

moraineQuinn 2006 p32

Snow Plant (sarcodes sanguinea) • Myco-hetrotrophic• Derives from underground

fungi associated with adjacent trees

• Evolves from mutualistic autotrophic mycorrhizal plants

Snow Plant continued

• Evolutionary mutations allowed them to stop producing photosynthesis

• Can survive solely on underground fungi • Survives on selected fungi, may die from host

jumping• Evolved over 40 times within plant lineageMerckx 2009

Mullein (verbascum thapsus)• Of figwort family• Grows and spreads from

native environment to new introduced environments

• Adaption to new environments allows the weeds to grow fast and better defend its self

Kumschich, 2013

Metamorphic rock

• Slate• Smooth texture caused by

pressure and heat of magma

• Minerals are arranged in planes

• Forces have deformed it over time

Igneous rock

• Granite• Phaneritic texture

indicates slower cooling in plutons

• Dark fragments indicate inclusions

• Magma melted parts of rock
