A SOUTH HOBART NEWSLETTER
NEXT SHPA MEETING
The next General Meeting of the
Association will be held on
Wednesday 13th June, commencing
at 7:30 pm at the South Hobart Community Hall, 42 D’Arcy Street,
South Hobart. All residents, especially
those new to the Suburb, are welcome.
[Please note that we will no longer be meeting at the South Hobart Living
Arts Centre.]
SOUTH HOBART BUSHCARE South Hobart Bushcare will be having
its next Work Bee on Sunday, 17th
June, 2018, starting at 10:00 am ‘til
12:30 pm, meeting at the bottom Car park, Cascade Gardens, McRobies
Gully Road, to do primary removal of
broom around the historic Cascade
Gardens Sign. All equipment provided. Enquiries to Janet on 6223
8132.
PRESIDENT’S REPORT Not surprisingly as you walk around
South Hobart conversations inevitably
turn to the downpour and subsequent
flooding that subsequently hit our suburb on Thursday & Friday 10-11
May. What a frightening and
catastrophic night it was! It is hard to
find anyone or any home that was not affected by, what will hopefully be, a
once-in a life-time, event. For those of
us who had to deal with leaking roofs,
gardens washed away, or water under the house, let’s not forget those who
really suffered. The sheer heartbreak
of watching the damage caused by half
a metre of water going through your own home cannot be underestimated.
It will take months, if not years, for
lives and property to fully recover. On
behalf of the Association and the broader community, our deepest
sympathies to those that have found
themselves in this situation.
The Association would also like to place on the public record our
appreciation for the magnificent
response to the crisis from the Hobart
City Council. From the aldermen, standing in all the debris the next day,
helping and consoling those most
affected, to the council staff working
hard - often after hours - to try and lessen the impact on people’s lives and
Council infrastructure. Nothing was
more impressive than hundreds of community members turning up to

help clear rubbish from the Hobart
Rivulet. Organised by HCC
Bushcare, over 240 people managed
to pick up half a tonne of rubbish and recyclable material. Congratulations
- it should be an annual event. The
Rivulet, and associated walking track,
has, predictably, sustained a significant amount of damage, and a
damage assessment has been
completed by the Council and a
works programme developed and prioritised. The Association will
continue to push to have the much-
loved and used Rivulet Park repaired
as soon as possible. The Association has also pressed the Council to look
at additional flood mitigation
measures for McRobie’s Gully given
the amount of damage caused by the runoff. Although there are no simple
solutions, given the quantum of
rainfall that fell and the topography
of the area, the possibility is being investigated. We will keep a
watching brief on this matter: in the
age of climate change the timeframe for once-in-a-life-time events may
become considerably shorter. For
those that may be interested, the
Insurance Council of Australia is holding an Insurance Claim
Guidance Forum on 14th June.
Designed to help those who want to
better understand the rights of policy holders and obligations of the
insurance companies, it is necessary
to register by noon Wednesday 13th
June. To register, and receive venue details, go to www.disasters.org.au/
forums or call 1800 734 621.
NOT THIS TIME Cascade Gardens Damage
Besides being saturated in the recent
storm, Cascade Gardens escaped
ser ious da ma ge , t ha nks to maintenance works carried out by the
HCC parks staff on the “Trash Rack”
shortly before the rains. This was not
the case in December 1923, when Hobart was subjected to one of its
regular deluges. In 1923, the
Gardens were operated as ornamental

gardens and a plant nursery by Mr. A. Sayers. Along with an associated Tea
Room, it was a very popular
recreational area for the people of
Hobart. In the storm, huge logs and boulders banked up on a nearby
bridge over the Rivulet, causing low
lying areas to be flooded. Several
thousand asters, carnations, pansies, Iceland poppies, and delphiniums
were swept away. Foundations from
Cascade Road were also washed into
the Garden. The loss was estimated at about £600 - a lot of money at the
time. [Ref: The Mercury 6 Dec 1923.]
THOUGHT BUBBLE
PLANNING The South Hobart Progress
Association is strongly opposed to any changes to traffic arrangements
which significantly increase the
number of vehicles using the
residential streets of the suburb. Despite our lobbying efforts, our
suburb has become a parking lot for
Hobart commuters, the landing strip
for the thousands of cars associated with the “pie-in-the-sky” cable car,
and now we have the State
Government’s latest ‘thought bubble’
pushing more traffic into our streets and shopping areas. The Government
has released a consultant’s report
aimed at dealing with traffic
congestion on the Southern Outlet. Vehicles wanting to get into South
Hobart will no longer be able to use
the slip lane between Davey and
Macquarie Streets but will be re-directed to Elboden Street: a change
that has major implications not only
for the residents in Elboden Street but
also for local traders in the shopping precinct. The Association has been
reassured that it is early days, and that
community consultation on the
Southern Outlet Proposal will begin in earnest shortly. This is to be
welcomed: community consultation
and more information are very good
things. The Association will invite a Government representative to our
General Meeting on either the 13th
June or 11th July to present the
options. In the mean time, Mike Dutta from Macquarie Street Foodstore has
organised a meeting to hear from the
Department of State Growth and gauge public opinion. Please go
along on 13th June at 5.30pm to the
Macquarie Street Foodstore, 356
Macquarie Street. Contact: Mike Dutta on 6224 6862.
SOIL TESTING OF
RIVULET Independent scientific soil testing of
several homes in McRobies Road
and Degraves Street, which was instigated by the Hobart City
C o u n c i l f o l l o w i n g t h e
unprecedented rains in mid May,
confirmed that there were no issues of concern. An HCC spokesman
added that: ...”as a matter of course,
we advise all residents to wash their
hands before eating after contact with soil. However, this advice
would be provided for any
gardeners throughout the City”.
PLEA TO SHOP LOCALLY As a resident of South Hobart since
the late eighties, I have always been
active and passionate about shopping locally: hence my support
of our wonderful variety of local
shops. Recently, I have heard
disturbing rumblings that some of our shops are 'doing it hard'. To lose
any one of these shops would be a
great shame and lessen the vitality
of the Village. One shopkeeper said to me that the difference between
succeeding, financially, is as few as
ten extra customers each day. Please be one of those 10. It is easier to
shop conveniently (I know, I do it!)
but if we do not spread our dollars
to all our local businesses, we will lose some and I, for one, will be
saddened by that loss. Please, walk
the extra few paces to buy from our
local shops so they, too, can pay their bills and staff and we, the local
community, can reap the benefits of
supporting our unique and diverse
local shops. Jan Edmitson.
