Smart Environments
“The ultimate goal of the IoT is to create a better world for human beings, where objects around usknows what we like, what we want, and what we need and act accordiglywithout explicit instructions.”

Goal
This work aims to present a Smart Parking Systembased on several innovative technologies, such as RFID,WSN, NFC and mobile phone, for the automaticmonitoring and management of parking spaces.

System Features
! Each parking slot is equipped with a BAP tag(s) (battery replaced by the proper solar cell), while several readers are deployed in the parking areas.
! When the light level detected by the solar cell becomes lower than a required by the tag to function properly, due to a car’s presence, the tag stop transmitting its data, and the system recognizes the slot as occupied.

System Features
! The HSN is also used to check that only authorized cars occupy the reserved parking places, by exploiting the UHF RFID tags on the car.
! Traffic cops are equipped with a smartphone connected to a portable RFID reader and running a customized application, called TrafficCop, through which they can read the tag to check the car permissions or historical information stored into the Control DB.
! The app allows also operators to update the memory content of RFID tags with important information to remind

System Features
! A different mobile application, called Parking App, helps the driver to find the parking spaces available in a given area, get the right directions to the selected parking spot, pay the parking fee, check the remaining parking time and receive push-style notifications when the purchased time is expiring.

Conclusions and Future Works
! We presented Smart Parking System (SPS) based on the combined use of several innovative IoTtechnologies, such as WSN,RFID, NFC, and mobile.
! The system exploits a heterogeneous network of hybrid UHF RFID and IEEE 802.15.4-based WSNdevices which can be rapidly deployed in any outdoor parking.
! A central server implementing advanced database management techniques constantly monitors theparking lots and, in case of unauthorized use of a space or expiration of a parking fee, promptlysends a notification to a smart App installed on the traffic cop's mobile phone.
! A different mobile application allows the drivers to find a vacant parking lot and pay the parking fee.
Thank you for your attention!
! An extension of this application in order to allow the user to increase the paid fee willcharacterize our future work.
! Additional services exploiting the UHF RFID tag on the car.
