HIS PAIN OUR GAIN HIS VICTORY
March 9 and 10, 2019
The devil had been winning the victory ever since the Garden of Eden. Every person
fell to his temptations. Until a confrontation in the Judean wilderness…
BELLS AND WELCOME
OPENING HYMN 122, VV. 1-4 Sing, My Tongue the Glorious Battle
M In the name of the Father and of the † Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.
CALL TO WORSHIP
M The LORD is king; let the peoples tremble! He sits enthroned between the cherubim; let the
earth quake!
C Let them praise your great and awesome name. Holy is he!
M Extol the LORD our God;
C worship at his footstool. Holy is he! (Psalm 99:1, 3, 5)
M You, Christ, are the King of Glory, the eternal Son of the Father.
C You have won the victory over sin, death, and hell!
M Come then, Lord, and help your people, bought with the price of your own blood, and bring
your saints to glory everlasting.
C Amen.
CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS
M Brothers and sisters in Christ, we live in a world that is held in bondage to sin and death.
We have experienced the truth of it in our own lives. The tempter is always misleading us,
and our sinful natures are only too ready to give in.
C Today we celebrate the victory of our Lord Jesus over the tempter.
M Because Jesus won the victory, we are able to come before God in faith and freedom,
acknowledging our sin, and trusting that through Jesus Christ, our Lord we, too, enjoy
victory over the tempter and all he stands for.
All Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful, and that I have disobeyed
you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is
good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for
my sins, and trusting in my Savior, Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

M God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the
atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I
forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the † Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.
M The works of the Lord are great and glorious; his name is worthy of praise.
SONG OF PRAISE 122, V. 5 Sing, My Tongue, the Glorious Battle
Unto God be praise and glory;
To the Father and the Son,
To th' eternal Spirit honor
Now and evermore be done --
Praise and glory in the highest
While the timeless ages run.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
M Let us pray.
Almighty God, the darkness deepens. The ancient foe exploits means, new and old, to trick
us with his dread deceits and flat-falling promises.
C Guard us this Lent, O God, with your strong right hand. Defend us against all that
threatens our life in Christ.
M We pray through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the
Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever
THE WORD
FIRST LESSON Genesis 3:1-15, Bible page 3 In the garden the battle begins. The first campaign ends in tragic defeat.
But a champion is promised through whom victory is certain.
SECOND LESSON Revelation 12:7-12, Bible page 1245
In his vision John takes us back to the heavenly battle that birthed Satan and his minions.
Then and always the final outcome is the same—complete and ultimate defeat of the evil one!
HYMN OF THE DAY 396 In Adam We Have All Been One
SERMON Luke 4:1-13, Bible page 1029
Pastor Nate Strobel
NICENE CREED
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is,
seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God
from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with
the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down
from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On
the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and
is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and
the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and
the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has
spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of
the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on
earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive
those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the
kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION
M The Lord be with you.
M Lift up your hearts
M Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
M Praise to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In love he has blessed us with every
spiritual blessing. He made his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for
ours but also for the sins of the whole world. Now have come the salvation and the power
and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ. To him who sits on the throne
and to the Lamb be praise and thanks and honor and glory forever and ever.

PRESIDING MINISTER (Sunday) Pastor David Kuehl
ORGANIST Nicole Greanya
OUR COMMUNION PRACTICE
The Lord’s Supper is a fellowship meal. In this meal Jesus expresses his fellowship with us by giving us his body and
blood for the forgiveness of sins. In this meal we also express our fellowship with each other, that is, that we are
united in a common confession of faith.
We at St. Paul’s want everyone to enjoy this fellowship meal. However, we cannot ask someone to express agreement
with us until we give that person an opportunity to discover what we teach. That is why we schedule frequent
membership classes to provide an overview of our teachings. Following the Promise is currently being held on
Tuesday evenings and Sunday mornings. Contact Pastor Nate Strobel at nstrobel@stpaulmuskego.org to register.
If you are a member of St. Paul’s or a member of a WELS or ELS congregation, we invite you to express our common
confession by communing with us. The light colored cups in the center of the individual cup tray contain non-
alcoholic wine. Gluten-free wafers are located in the trays on the Communion rail.

Cudahy. Her husband, Randall, is a teacher and head coach of the varsity girls’ basketball team at
Wisconsin Lutheran High School. Mrs. Strutz sent the following letter to the congregation in response
to receiving our call:
March 2, 2019
Brothers and sisters in Christ,
Through you, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and School, I have received a Divine Call to teach third grade
in the upcoming 2019-2020 school year. I am humbled in receiving this call, and thankful for the opportunity to consider how I can serve God in His kingdom. It is truly a blessing to be able to share
God’s Word with others through His ministry.
As I deliberate this call, I ask that you keep my husband, Randy, and I in your prayers. In the next few
weeks, I look forward to being in contact with St. Paul’s and learning more about your church and
school. I will continuously pray not only for guidance and strength in this decision, but for your
congregation as well. Thank you again for extending this call, and I ask for your continued prayers as I
deliberate.
Blessings,
Christel Strutz
MR. JEFF WETZEL DIVINE CALL DECLINED
Mr. Wetzel, our 5th grade homeroom teacher, has declined the divine call to serve as principal at
Trinity Lutheran School in Caledonia, Wisconsin. We pray the Lord’s blessing over Mr. Wetzel and his
family as he continues to serve the Lord here at St. Paul’s. Mr. Wetzel wrote the following letter:
March 5, 2019
Dear Members of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and School,
After much prayerful consideration, God’s direction and guidance has led me to return the call to lead
the school at Trinity Lutheran in Caledonia, Wisconsin. I am trusting this is the decision the Lord has led me to and how He wants me to use my gifts at this time. I am excited to continue my ministry here
at St. Paul’s, and pray that I am able to bring children closer to Christ.
Please keep Trinity Lutheran in your prayers, as they are currently without a leader. We can be
confident the Lord will provide the right servant to help them move forward when the time is right.
Respectfully submitted in His service,
Mr. Jeffrey W. Wetzel

WEDNESDAY MIDWEEK LENTEN SERVICES—3:30 AND 7:00 PM Join us as we continue to walk with Jesus through the critical hours leading up to
his suffering and death. We are looking at statements full of irony that were said
during the passion, comments that surprise us because of who said them or that
they have a meaning so different than what the speaker intended. Enjoy hearing
from a guest preacher each of the remaining Wednesdays of Lent.
ENJOY A SOUP SUPPER BETWEEN SERVICES
Come enjoy a warm meal and camaraderie with your friends between our Wednesday Lenten
services, 4:30 to 6:30 pm, in the Grace Room. A free will offering is gathered at the soup supper to
help defray the cost of the food and to support the ministry of the hosting group. The St. Paul’s
Quilting Fellowship will be hosting this Wednesday’s soup supper.
QUILTING FELLOWSHIP TO HOST WEDNESDAY SOUP SUPPER
St Paul's Quilting Fellowship has been serving the congregation for eleven years with the mission to
provide quilts to those in need of comfort and hope. Over 450 quilts have been given to the
homebound of the congregation, babies and moms of WELS Lutherans for Life, the VA Hospital, St
Paul's Alzheimer's group, The Muskego Taxi service, the Muskego Woman's Club, and many cancer
patients and survivors. Our two special outreach projects this past year include making "Little
Dresses for Africa" which were delivered by the Wisconsin Lutheran College junior nursing students
to schools in Lusaka, Zambia. In addition, twenty of our barbie doll quilts were donated during the
Christmas season by the Wisconsin Woodworker's Guild who made the barbie doll sized beds.
Any donations given at Wednesday's soup supper will be used toward quilting materials for the
mission to continue. In addition, quilts will be on display and for sale with a $30 donation. The
Quilting Fellowship meets the first Thursday of the month year-round. New members are always
welcome. For more information contact Group Coordinator Annette Navarre at (262) 922-0009

ST. PAUL’S NEWS
Our vision is that by every possible means we bring every
person in our area of influence closer to Christ through
regular worship, small groups, and serving together.
1. Start your time together by sharing the past week's highs and lows. What are your hopes for
the month ahead?
2. This week's message is about temptation. We define temptations as "the desire to do something,
especially something wrong or unwise." How would you describe a life without temptations?
3. Re-read the message text (Luke 4:1-13) and discuss how each of these three temptations still
exists in our world today. How do they look or sound in your personal life or in society at large?
4. Pastor Nate reminds us of the old adage that says "the Devil is in the details." Can you recall
any other temptations of historic figures in scripture where the details, darkness, and lies
proved to be too much for anyone other than Jesus?
5. Read Hebrews 4:15. Has there ever been a time in your life (or someone you know) that these
words gave comfort and strength where there had previously been none?
6. Pastor Nate closed up his message with two steps that God encourages us to fight temptation
with: 1) Take up the sword (of the Spirit) and 2) Trust the plan. Which one of these two is
typically more challenging for you?
7. Break into groups of 2-3 and wrap up your time together in prayer about the daily temptations
in your life.
GroupWork Bible Study Discussion Starters
Life application materials for us in Connector Groups, home devotions, and other small groups.
JOB #1 – JESUS CAME TO DESTROY THE DEVIL’S WORK
Luke 4:1-13, Bible page 1029
The __________ is in the details, isn’t he?
1. Jesus Waded Into the Details!
A. The ____________ of Our Sinful Condition
B. The ______ and ________ - _________ of the Devil
APPLICATION Why did Jesus submit himself to these rounds of temptation and suffering?
1. To save us, Jesus had to follow God’s ________ perfectly for us. This was a demonstration
of his intent and his persistence!
2. To be able to speak personally and credibly to our suffering, Jesus suffered the __________
the devil and the sinful world can bring at us!
2. Jesus Teaches Us How to Fight!
A. “Pick up the __________ of the _________, which is the Word of God.”
B. “And Trust the ________ of the __________ in all things.”
APPLICATION When facing temptation or evil, are we ever tempted to deviate from God’s plan?
CONCLUSION The Sword of the Spirit is meant for the ____________ of our lives, and in our most
vulnerable moments the Spirit will place his ___________ on our lips.
Next Steps
• Look Back: Read Genesis 3:1-8. Talk about the “Six D-words of Temptation” that the devil used
to bring mankind under the curse of sin--Disguise, Doubt, Disagree, Deceit, Desire, Destruction.
Comment on the devil’s way of operating in our lives today.
• Think Ahead: Read Revelation 12:7-12. The devil’s name means “accuser.” What “blade” of the
Spirit has Jesus placed into your hands according to verse 11? Why is this a comforting thought?
• Sharing to Learn: As you are comfortable, share moments in your life when the devil tempted
you to doubt God’s love or God’s plan. What words of Scripture did God give you for the fight?
