AMicroclimate Study @HCIGroup 4Joel Tan(25)Chen Xinyang(5)Kai Wilson(16)Daniel(12)

Over a timespan of two lessons, we went through various locations through out the HCI compound

We took the readings of temperatures at these places, and at various heights above the ground.

Overview

Areas with no natural vegetation/concrete are generally hotter than areas with natural vegetations.

Hypothesis

Cooler Hotter

Comparison of weather conditions between both readings. The lesson was conducted during the early morning(8.30a.m.). It was generally windy and the sun was absent. Relative Humidity was low and there was more cloud cover.

First Day

Comparison of weather conditions between both readingsThe lesson was conducted in the early afternoon(1.00p.m.), hence the sun was directly overhead, making it very hot. There was little cloud cover and the relative humidity was high.

Second Day

Multi-Storey Carpark

Concrete Areas

Non-Concrete Areas

The multi-storey car park is directly under the sun.

It is not covered by any natural vegetation It is made out of concrete.

Area 1: MSCP

  15 cm from ground

1.5 mfrom ground

Day 1 26.9° C 27.0° C

Day 2 30.5° C 30.7° C

Average Temperature= 28.775° C

The surface of the garden is grass. There is a winding concrete path beside

the garden. Even though the garden is beside tall

buildings, the buildings provide little shade.

Area 2: Garden

  15 cm from ground

1.5 mfrom ground

Day 1 27.5° C 27.5° C

Day 2 29.9° C 29.7° C

Average Temperature= 28.65° C

The surface of this area is made up mostly of concrete tiles.

The area is surrounded by tall buildings and trees, hence making it generally shady.

Area 3: Open Space Between Canteen and Block C

  15 cm from ground

1.5 mfrom ground

Day 1 27.0° C 27.1° C

Day 2 30.1° C 29.9° C

Average Temperature= 28.525° C

The top few steps of the terraces is shaded by trees along the top of the terraces while the rest is unshaded.

The surface of the terraces is made out of concrete.

There is no natural vegetation growing on the steps.

Area 4: Terraces

  15 cm from ground

1.5 mfrom ground

Day 1 26.9° C 26.9° C

Day 2 30.6° C 29.5° C

Average Temperature= 28.475° C

The field is an open, grassy area which is directly under the sun.

It is not near any buildings hence there is no shade.

Area 5: Field

  15 cm from ground

1.5 mfrom ground

Day 1 29.0° C 28.2° C

Day 2 30.8° C 30.8° C

Average Temperature= 29.7° C

The running track is made out of rubber, a poor conductor of heat.

It is directly under the sun. It is not near any buildings hence there

is no shade.

Area 6: Running Track

  15 cm from ground

1.5 mfrom ground

Day 1 27.1° C 28.4° C

Day 2 31.4° C 31.2° C

Average Temperature= 29.525° C

The fountain area outside the general office is made out of granite tiles.

There is a man-made pool of water. It receives little shade even though it is near

tall buildings. It is directly under the sun. There is no natural vegetation growing near

the area.

Area 7: Fountain

  15 cm from ground

1.5 mfrom ground

Day 1 26.7° C 27.0° C

Day 2 31.1° C 30.3° C

Average Temperature= 28.775° C

CONCRETE AREAS MSCP Open space

NON-CONCRETE AREAS Garden outside printing centre Fountain area Terraces Field Running track

Comparing temperatures of concrete areas and non-concrete surfaces.

MSCP Open Space Average Temperature

28.775° C 28.525° C 28.65° C

Concrete Surfaces:

Garden Fountain Terraces Field Running Track

Average Temperature

28.65° C 28.775° C 28.475° C 29.7° C 29.525° C 29.025° C

Non-concrete Surfaces:

Conclusion… Hypothesis: Areas with no natural

vegetation /concrete are generally hotter than areas with natural vegetations.

Results: Concrete Surfaces- 28.65° C Non-concrete Surfaces- 29.025° C (Higher)

Hypothesis is rejected/not reliable.

Thank You...
