Using Web 2.0 Technologies in the Media Center

Melissa Corey, MLSJune 2009

Possible Framework

• INSTRUCTION– Information Literacy

Instruction• TOOLS– Ning– NetVibes– Blogs/Wikis– SlideShare Presentations– Firefox with

• Delicious, Zotero, RSS Readers

• RESOURCES– Databases– Google Scholar– Google Books– General Websites– News sites– Blogs/Wikis– Etc.

A student needs to conduct research. First, they can visit the media

center’s Ning.

Next, they can navigate to their group page to view tools and

resources.

From this page, they can view discussions and follow links to library-

and subject-oriented resources.

Information literacy instructional materials can be linked from here

as a refresher for students.

NetVibes can be used to build a pathfinder for each class, subject,

or topic.

The NetVibes “Search” tab is a great place to aggregate resources with

direct searching capability.

Students are linked with not only web resources but also library resources, such as databases.

Students can search a database, subscribe to an RSS feed for their search terms, and

bookmark results using Delicious or Zotero, all in Firefox.

This is just one example of what is possible within our Instruction, Tools,

Resources framework.

Each element can be adjusted to suit the needs of individual classes,

students, and teachers.
