DESCRIPTION

There have been four LEED Lab Remodels completed in the UC/CSU/CCC systems; three at UCSF and one at UC Davis. This presentation discusses the results of a comparative analysis of the LEED submittals of all four projects and proposes a formula for achieving LEED Gold on lab remodels with minimal additional project costs. The formula we will be presenting is only one credit away from achieving LEED Platinum without significant cost increases. This work validates that sustainability is more tactical than costly. We will also discuss sustainability issues for lab remodels that go beyond current LEED metrics including frugal planning, energy zoning, and building fewer square feet. Most of these issues will apply broadly to other types of interior remodels in existing buildings.
