Primary Function:- To attract animals to pollinate the plant and

reproduce.

This is necessary in order for the species to survive!

Pollination vs. Fertilization

• There is a difference!!!

• Pollination is the transfer of pollen grain from the anther to the pistil

• Fertilization occurs when the sperm joins with the egg in the ovary of the plant

Where do Seeds come from?

• Seeds are basically enlarged ovules within a plant’s ovary

• Seeds are formed after fertilization occurs

• Seeds are what sprouts new plants!!!

Seed Anatomy

1. Seed Coat – protective outer layer

2. Embryo – earliest stage of development for a plant

3. Endosperm (Cotyledon) – food storage tissue that supports development of growing embryo

Fruit Formation

Question: What enlarges to become the fruit within a plant?

Answer: The Ovary!!!

Remember: When we eat an apple, we are eating the ovary which surrounds the seeds or core of the apple! Yum!!!

How do Fruits help Seeds?

1. Provide protection for the developing seeds

2. Can help seeds spread
