A Cornucopia of Classroom Concepts

In an ideal situation, what do I want my students to do?

show CURIOSITY

CONQUER fearsof inadequacy

when writing, establish CREDIBILITY, find COMMON

GROUND, CONVINCE

aim for COMPETENCE: never shoot for a C. “Students will float to the mark

you set for them.”

(Mike Rose, “I Just Wanna Be Average”)

Use both CRITICAL and CREATIVE thinking

CLAIM responsibility for their decisions and accept the CONSEQUENCES of their

actions—and inaction

CONTACT me

What can my students expect me to do?

CALL them by name

offer CHALLENGES

temper challenges with COMPASSION

CLARIFY explanations

Make CONCEPTS as CONCRETE as possible

Respond promptly with COMMENTS

and CORRECTIONS

COACH students who need extra help,

and encourage students to coach classmates

Use COMEDY—or at least humor

help my students to CARE—about ideas, issues, people,

their own success

Enable significant CHANGE

--SCSU Vice President Ron Herron

CONCLUDE each class with a “Quick CAT”

(class assessment tool)

CELEBRATE progress and each student’s contribution to the class

What can my students and I do together to make the course a

success?

COLLABORATE with others, and COLLECT ideas and sources

CONTEMPLATE and reflect

Stay CURRENT, especially in CYBERTECHNOLOGY

writing.colostate.edu

CONNECT with ideas, people, and causes beyond the university

for example, freerice.com

freepoverty.com

QUICK CAT (class assessment tool)

How many of the C concepts can you jot down right now?

What C concept can you add to my list?

On the other side of the cardWhat will you take away from this

presentation? What should I add or change?

THANK YOU!
