A New Year, A New You
By the time you read this, we will be turning the calendar to January 2018. What happened to 2017? The years pass so quickly. As we begin another year, I think about the Covenant Prayer John Wesley, founder of Methodism, used in spiritual renewal services. The prayer was first used by Wesley in 1755 with a crowd of 1800 people in London! He attributed the words to an English Puritan divine by the name of Richard Alleine. The words of this prayer are recognized as one of the most distinctive contributions of Methodism to the liturgy of the general Church. This prayer is used not only by Methodists, but congregations of other denominations and faiths. The form of the covenant prayer and service have been simplified since Wesley's time, but important elements of them are still retained from Wesley's Directions. They include many of the words both of the bidding that traditionally precedes the prayer, and the prayer itself. The bidding traditionally includes phrasing such as:
“...Christ has many services to be done. Some are easy, others are difficult. Some bring honour, others bring reproach. Some are suitable to our natural inclinations and temporal interests, others are contrary to both…. Yet the power to do all these things is given to us in Christ, who strengthens us.”
Here is the traditional form of the Covenant Prayer: I am no longer my own, but thine. Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt. Put me to doing, put me to suffering. Let me be employed for thee or laid aside for thee, exalted for thee or brought low for thee. Let me be full, let me be empty. Let me have all things, let me have nothing. I freely and heartily yield all things to thy pleasure and disposal. And now, O glorious and blessed God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, thou art mine, and I am thine. So be it. And the covenant which I have made on earth, let it be ratified in heaven. Amen.
Join us at Seaside Church on Sunday, January 21st as we share in a time of covenant for the new year. Blessings, Mary Jane

United Methodist Men Meeting January 8th at 6:30 pm
Each week our Guest Receptions provide guests who are new to Seaside the opportunity to meet folks from the congregation as well as some of the staff, ask any questions they may have about the church, receive information and even a Seaside mug! Held after each service in the Church Parlor, this is a part of Seaside’s way of saying “hello” and welcoming our guests into our community.
In order to make these receptions successful, we ask all members of Seaside to serve as hosts after their worship service once per quarter. Hosting is easy! All you need is a smile, a warm handshake and an enthusiasm for Seaside. Hosting requires only about 15 minutes of your time. If you would like to be added to the Hosts List, please sign up in the Gallery, call Stefanie or on-line at www.seasideumc.org/guests-reception-ministry/. You will then be contacted by Stefanie or Jane Boone. Thank you for providing a warm welcome to our guests!
Twice during the month of November, Seaside's Food Pantry served over 100 clients in one day, making November an extremely busy month. Through your generosity, along with that that of our local Food Lion in Sunset Beach, 110 vouchers for Turkeys were
distributed. Food Lion continues to work closely with us in serving our clients, and we appreciate their cooperation and support of our Pantry. Following is the number of clients served during November: Seniors-320 Adults-358 Children-168 Total served-846 Total households served-303 As we enter into colder months and the New Year, please know how much your dedication to this outreach mission of our church is needed and appreciated. Ann Pike, Seaside Food Pantry Director

Teddy Bear Ministry
February 6th 12:30 to 4 PM
The Teddy Bear Ministry will hold a “Make A Bear” afternoon. All materials will be provided. If you have a sewing
machine, please bring it. If you can cut material, sew, "stuff" a bear or tie a bow, YOU ARE NEEDED!
In 2017 over 100 bears were distributed to local hospitals and first responders.
Testimony from a Father
Seaside received a phone call from a child’s father a few years ago about one of our bears!
His son was in an accident while the family was vacationing here and received a bear in the
emergency room. He was then admitted to the hospital for a few days. The father worked
through the hospital to find out who had provided the bear. When he called to thank the
Teddy Bear Ministry, he said that this simple bear made a significant difference in his son’s
recovery. He would not let it go!
Come and join us for all or part of the afternoon.
Please call Bernita Magee (575-5958) or Carol Matthews (575-4267) if you have questions.
January United Methodist Men’s Dinner Meeting
The results of our Christmas tree sales will be discussed as well as the budgeted charitable donations for 2018 based on 2017 fundraising efforts. Fund raising for 2018 begins with “The Rock-N-Blues” Concert on February 13th. Bob Kogler still needs commitments to help with ticket sales, promotions, and ushering on the concert date. United Methodist Men enjoy serving our church and community. We are always looking for more men to participate by joining us at our social meetings and working on our projects. We are striving to reach a 2018 goal of at least 50 attendees at our monthly dinner meetings. Consider
bringing a friend or neighbor as a guest to our next meeting in January. They do not have to be a member of Seaside UMC to join our group as we welcome all members of our community. See Page 8 for January meeting information.
Seaside’s
DivorceCare begins a new session Tuesday, January 9 at 6:30 PM. The group meets
every Tuesday from 6:30-8:30 PM. The cost to attend is $15.00 for the workbook.
DivorceCare is a 13 week series that you can begin attending at any point. Each
session is “self-contained,” so you do not need to attend the sessions in sequence. You
will be able to pick up any sessions you missed in the next 13-week cycle. Each week
there will be a video and discussion about issues being faced during this time. DivorceCare seminars and support groups
are led by people who understand what you are going through and want to help. You will learn how to heal from the deep
hurt of divorce and discover hope for your future. Whether you are recently separated/divorced or if it has been a few
years, DivorceCare is a support group that can help you with your recovery.

Faith in Film, January 30th at 5:00 pm
Message from Pat Litzinger, ADS of the UM Harbor District “You are a part of one of 12 wonderful United Methodist churches in Brunswick County. As you know, sadly many children in Brunswick County are affected by poverty, which in turn impacts their academic development, among other things.Children who have the ability to read by the end of third grade are much more likely to succeed in school and break out of the cycle of poverty.
We can help children to do this! BEST FOR KIDS is a brand new, Brunswick County initiative committed to helping kids become fluent readers by the end of the third grade - by strategically utilizing volunteer tutors from various parts of the community (businesses, churches, retirement communities etc.) Tutors will be trained in a specific reading curriculum and matched with a child who they will tutor, twice a week, over the course of the school year. For us, BEST FOR KIDS is particularly exciting because it is very much in line with our state-wide United Methodist "Congregations For Children" (C4C) initiative - www.nccc4c.org BEST FOR KIDS was the vision of a working group comprised of community leaders representing various elements of the county including government, business, law enforcement, faith-based, non-profit and education. I've had the privilege of being a part of this group which has been working in partnership with Brunswick County Schools to develop this special volunteer opportunity, In 2018, the BEST FOR KIDS pilot will be rolled out at the following four elementary schools:
Jessie Mae Monroe Elementary Lincoln Elementary Virginia Williamson Elementary Supply Elementary We hope that you and/or your church will be a part of this effort. You can make a difference in the life of a child.
To Watch A Video That Described BEST FOR KIDS click on this link: https://youtu.be/rk8e_OvLlgk Please advertise to your congregation the tutoring training that will be offered Weds, Jan 10th, 9am-3:30pm at the Brunswick Community College. This is for those who wish to serve as tutors for the BEST FOR KIDS pilot, or just learn more about it. We are encouraging all of our United Methodist churches in Brunswick County to support this effort by attending the training on January 10th.” If you are interested in attending, you can register on line at www.bcswan.net or contact Meg at the church for more details. Jessie Mae is the school that Seaside supports through our summer literacy program, STARS.
Seaside Welcomes New Class of Stephen Ministry Candidates on January 7th
On January 7th, eight individuals who have answered the call to Stephen Ministry will begin their 50 hours of training to be commissioned as Stephen Ministers in July. Stephen Ministers in our congregation minister in one-on-one Christian caring relationships with those who are in need of special care during difficult times. Please keep these new candidates in your prayers over the coming months, along with the 32 active Stephen Ministers in our congregation.
