7th Annual International Systems Conference

VP Conferences Report

April 2013

Why Are We here?

Systems Engineering is a discipline needed in almost every environment and application

•Commercial products•Infrastructure such as energy, transportation, etc•Health care•Defense systems•Information technology•Communication systems•etc

Why?•It is the overarching engineering “glue” that views the “system” as a whole – looking at all the components and elements—intended use---maintenance---human interface---safety---environment---

- - - and complex, systems-of-systems are becoming more the norm than the exception

Systems Engineering is no magic wand - - -

But we had some magic this year . . .

And Announcing--

8th AnnualInternational Systems Conference

March 30-April 3, 2014

Fairmont Chateau Laurier HotelOttawa, ONT, Canada

Proposed New Conference

• 1st Annual IEEE International Systems Symposium• June 2014• Italy• Rationale:

– Original plan was to do the full Conference in Europe in 2014– We have finally gained traction in North America– IEEE suggests that sometimes when you shift a conference

across continents, attendance suffers– IEEE suggested starting a companion Symposium in Europe

• Start small: plan for 75-100 attendees• Major city, near transportation• Chairs: Paolo Carbone and Bob Rassa

Association of Old CrowsTechnical Co-sponsorship

• AOC Conference with IEEE SysC technical cosponsorship– Systems Council would be owner of technical content in IEEE

Xplore– SysC would have 1-2 people on technical program committee

• September 16-21, 2013• Monterey CA . Hyatt Regency Monterey• Still awaiting an MOU
