Breaking Down Each “S”
5
Clearly distinguishing between what is necessary and
what is unnecessary and disposing of the unnecessary6
• Always start by sorting all items from the work area
• Use the red tagging process for items that you are unsure of
• Asking why enables the sorting process; For example –
• Why do we need it?
• Why is it used the way it is?
• Why do we have the same thing in many areas?
• If we need it, Why does it not have a home?
• An “item” can be material or information
Sort – The Process
• Organizing the necessary items so that they can
be easily identified and used as needed
– First decide where all items should be so that the
organization is easy to use and understand
– Choose proper storage methods that minimize inventory and
promote visual management
– Visually indicate locations so items in use can be returned
and missing items are easily identified
– Make sign boards that clearly explain inventory, equipment,
and other items so anyone can understand the workplace

that facilitates the maintenance and improvement of
the first three S’s
– Eliminate causes of dirt, leaks, and spills
– Create systems to keep things neat and organized
– Have daily routine to manage abnormal conditions
– Use standard documentation to drive consistency

standard routines to drive results
