member of the canine family. Thereare about 7,000 to 11,200 wolves inAlaska and more than 5,000 in thelower 48 states. There are 200,000

wolves in 57 countries. Wolves live ,travel and hunt in packs of 47

animals on average.

The Early Years

When a wolf isyoung its calleda pup becausewolves areancestors. Ofdogs. So a wolfpup is supposeto stay with itsmother until its 5months oldwhich means itwould be thenormal size of adog.

Gray wolves live incold places withmountains so theycan use cavesinstead when theirbabies are born sothey can keep themsafe.To keep comfywolves live in thecaves or dens.Thehabitat is cold haslots of trees.

Mostly wolves like to feed on elk, deer,caribou, beaver , rabbit and othersmall animals. Wolves are alsoscavengers and often eat animals thathave died out. Sometimes wolves hideso their prey won’t see them and thenthe wolf pounces on their prey.

Most wolf trackslook like holesmade by rocks thatwere probablyheavy and small ormedium . Most ofthese tracks arefound in Minnesota,Michigan, andWisconsin.
