5 questions NOT to ask employees
If you’ve decided to embark on an employee engagement program, one of the issues you are probably grappling with is what questions to ask.
However, consideration should also be given to what NOT to ask.
Here are a few to avoid…
1. Issues that do not align with the vision, strategy and values of the organization
Remember - what you ask sends a message about what is valued in the organization and what leadership feels is important.
2. Questions about issues or things you CAN NOT change
Sure, it would be great if everybody could get all that they wanted but often organizational, financial, or legal constraints may prohibit moving forward.
3. Questions about issues or things you are NOT WILLING to change
There are some things that maybe could be changed, but the organization is not willing to pursue them at the current time.
Remember-asking for feedback and then not acting on it is much worse than not asking in the first place.
4. Questions about trivial things
Don’t waste employees’ time on trivial matters when more meaningful or critical issues should be addressed.
5. Issues that are not relevant to the people you are asking
Avoid asking questions about issues that employees may not have enough information or visibility to make meaningful judgements about.
Remember, whether you ask one question or one hundred, your survey is the first chapter in what MUST BECOME an ongoing conversation with your employees.
If you’re curious about the first question you should ask AFTER your survey, read our eBook on the Employee Net Promoter Score.
