Breaking Open The Word
July 2, 2017
Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading: 2 Kings 4:8-11, 14-16a A woman in Shunem believed strongly in the holiness of the prophet Elisha. To reward her, Elisha promised that she and her aging husband would, within the year, be the parents of a son. Second Reading: Romans 6:3-4, 8-11 Paul explains to the Romans that immersion in water at baptism they “die” to their sins; by rising from the water, they rise from “death and sin” to new life in Christ. Gospel: Matthew 10:37-42 With simplicity, Jesus tells his apostles that everyone should love him above all others – father, mother, son or daughter. He adds, “He who welcomes you, welcomes Me” Consider/Reflect “Whoever receives you receives me and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me…And whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink because this little one is a disciple, amen, I say to you he will surely not lose his regard.” One of the gifts Pope Francis extols is the gift of hospitality. In our families, in our church, we have the ability to open the door and make others feel welcome. A familiar Irish expression reads “A Hundred Thousand Welcomes.” Elisha the prophet in the Book of Kings was offered hospitality by a wealthy woman, and she was rewarded for her gift. The person ready and willing to give ONLY a cup of cold water in the name of Jesus to a little one will not go without a reward. It is not uncommon to see people carrying a water bottle in public. Sometimes we look for a fountain for a drink. Maybe the gift of water and hospitality for us can be welcoming a stranger, assisting someone in need, listening to a person who has suffered a loss or suffering a sickness. Whatever gesture I offer can be the Elisha gesture, and the water offering which might seem small does not go unrewarded.

FAMILY PROMISE Sunday, July 9th will soon be here. Our
families will be arriving for a two-week stay and return again the last week of August.
St. Theresa’s Family Promise team thanks you for your donations of sheets, blankets and towels. Because of your generosity, we have ALL that we need for what will become the bedrooms of our guests.
Our Parish will be hosting four families including a Dad, Mom and three teenage sons, a mom with two teenage girls, and a grandmother, mom, dad and a new born baby girl.
Our volunteers will be preparing the meals; however, there are many extra items we will need to purchase right before the families arrive. Some of those items are perishable foods. Please consider donating a Walmart or Acme gift card. If you can help, please drop the card at the parish office before July 5. Sorry but we cannot accept any cards AFTER this date.
We appreciate all the parishioners who have volunteered their time and the generosity of those donating for this much needed program. Thank you, Jeanette O’Rourke St. Theresa’s Coordinator

Good Samaritan Project
You may have noticed in a recent church bulletin a request to be a “good
neighbor” by reaching out to someone in need and giving them a ride to church. It has been brought to our attention that there are people in our parish who don’t attend Sunday Mass for any other reason than they no longer drive and have no means of getting here. The goal of the program would be to match a person wanting to be a good neighbor with someone who has a need.
The Knights of Columbus are moving into Phase I of the program - Identifying those with a need. We have received some names from the parish office and are reaching out to the retirement communities within the parish. We don’t want to leave any stone unturned so if you know of anyone who needs a ride to church on a weekly basis, please let us know. You can reach out to Terry Walsh from the Knights either by e-mail or phone. He can be reached at (609) 857-5222 or at tpw54@comcast.net. We appreciate your help. HEARING LOOP SYSTEM
For those of us living with hearing loss, it is often difficult to understand the words spoken during Mass due to the challenging acoustical listening environment. In an effort to improve clarity and understanding, we have received a donation and installed an induction loop listening system. To benefit from this system, you will need to select a seat in the 2 sections of pews (when facing the Altar), to the left of the Baptismal Font and switch your hearing aid, cochlear implant or other listening device to the “T-Coil” or “telephone” position.
St. Theresa’s
MONTHLY 50/50 Raffle! Tickets are on sale in the gathering space and in the vestibule of the Daily Chapel after Mass or at the Parish Office during office hours.
Only 500 tickets are available! The next drawing will be held July 11th at 10:00 AM at the Parish Office. Please support this great fundraiser.
Respect Life Corner
The Respect Life Ministry Committee Meets:
the 3rd Thursday of each month in the Faith Formation Center @1:30 PM
Domestic Violence Anyone can be a victim of domestic violence. It is all about respecting all avenues of life.
For women aged 15 to 44, domestic violence is the leading cause of injury. Did you know that children living in a home where the mother is abused are also more likely to receive mistreatment or neglect by the abuser?
It can also happen in a dating relationship, (from 47% -87%) of violence occurs during either the steady or serious dating phase of the relationship. You should not keep it a secret if you are being abused by a spouse or loved one. If you are being hit, kicked, punched or verbally assaulted by your spouse, partner, or significant other, you must stop taking the abuse.
You can call National Domestic Violence Hot Line at 1-800-799-7233 (safe).
RESPECT LIFE BABY SHOWER
JUNE 17 & 18
Many thanks to all our parishioners for the beautiful baby items and very generous monetary donations received at our Baby Shower. The babies and mothers at Good Counsel, Open Door and Birthright Pregnancy Centers are the recipients of your generosity. May God Bless you all.
