TRANSCRIPT

Agenda Thursday, Nov. 12

homework 4 p. 193 # 21 - 24, 34 - 40 and p. 198 # 13 - 23

Quiz tomorrow on Ch. 4.1 - 4.4 (see checkpoint quiz p. 199 for sample problems)

4.3 - prime factorization with variable expressions4.4- simplifying fractions

Find the GCF of a variable expression.

Find the prime factorization of the coefficient.Write the variables in expanded form. Find common factors.

Example8xy2 and 6x3y

2*2*2*x*y*y 2*3*x*x*x*y

GCF = 2xy

Prime Factors of 4a3b

Prime Factors of 6a2b2

4a3b = 2*2*a*a*a*b

6a2b2 = 2*3*a*a*b*b

Find the prime factorization of each variable expression. Use the diagram below to show the prime factors. Then use it to find the GCF.

Directions: Use Venn diagrams to find the GCF of each set of numbers.

1) 4xy2, 2x2y GCF = 2xy

2) 6a2b2, 4ab3 GCF = 2ab2

3) 10m3n, 15m2n2 GCF = 5m2n

Find two fractions that are equivalent to

To write algebraic fractions in simplest form, first write the prime factorization of the expression.

Then divide the numerator and denominator by the common factors.
