What is Addition?

Parts of Addition Equation

Addends – these are the numbers added together

Sum – the answer in an addition equa-tion

Plus – addition symbol

STEPS1) Start adding from the ONES digits2) If the answer is 10 or above, retain the ONES digit and carry the TENS one on to the next digits to be added. 3) Repeat the process to the last digits to be added.

ESA stands for: E – Equation S – Solution A – Answer

E – EquationThis stands for the equation needed to help us solve the problem

S – SolutionThis is the actual way of solving the problem by using the necessary operation/s.

A – AnswerThis is the answer to the problem.

Steps

1) Read and understand the problem carefully.2) Identify the operation/s needed to solve the problem.3) Solve the problem by using ESA Method.

To identify the operation needed, we need to look for key words:

Example

Rigo bought a pair of shoes for 3,599 pesos. He also bought a shirt for 747 pesos, and a cap for 569 pesos. What is the total cost of the things he bought?
