HP P10000 3PAR Architecture Basics

• Same underlying architecture as T-Class• Cache coherent & massively load balanced

• Mixed workload• Thin Built-In

• Architectural enhancements• Full 64-bit HW and SW• Gen4 ASIC• PCIe Bus (node motherboards)

• 1GB Chunklets• T10 DIF

• Common OS and same advanced HP 3PAR software

Each InServ Physical disk is initialized with data chunklets and spare chunklets

Why are Chunklets so Important?

• Same drive spindle can service many different LUNS, and many different RAID types at the same time

• Enables array to be managed by policy, not by administrative planning

• Drives up utilization rate of the disks (no leftover space)

• Improved High Availability and Sparing

• Enables easy mobility between physical disks, RAID types, service levels

Common Provisioning Groups (CPG)

• CPGs are FUNDAMENTAL to administering 3PAR.• CPGs automatically provision Logical Disk capacity on demand• CPGs are the combination of a RAID type and a drive type

which equals SERVICE LEVEL and AVAILABILITY LEVEL.• CPGs have many functions:

• They are the policies by which free chunklets are assembled into logical disks.

• They are a container for existing volumes and used for reporting• They are the basis for service levels and our optimization products.

3PAR Software Overview

Adaptive Optimization

• Collects sub-volume region level access data from array

• Allows creation of policies for schedules, tier definitions

• Analyses data and initiates region movement

• Generates reports for Adaptive Optimization

Recovery Manager

• Traditional tape backup solutions find it almost impossible to complete backup and recovery within required time frames

• Competing Snapshot technologies cannot meet the granular recovery points due to limited number of snapshots supported

• Complex and Expensive– Often requires professional services

– Increased Capacity requirements

Recover Manager Overview

• Provide efficient local and disaster recovery solution

• Application Supported

• MS Exchange, MS SQL, Oracle, VMware Virtual Environments

• Value of RM products

• Rapid, affordable recovery of mission critical applications

• Hundreds of recovery points enabling tighter SLAs

• Minimize administrative tasks by tight integration with applications

• Build-in scheduler for taking non-disruptive Virtual Copy

• Integration with 3rd party backup tools

• Symantec NetBackup

• Oracle RMAN backup
