Vocabulary of a 3D Printer
Is it just a passing fad?

Question & Answer
Resources
3D Printer PartsBuild Plate - The surface in which the print is created. Some printers have heated build plates, others use blue tape, and some have specialized grip surfaces
Terms for Printing
Raft - A small piece of plastic laid down before the print. This gives better adherence to the build plate, and makes it easier to remove the print upon completion.
Terms for PrintingSupports - Small pieces built up to support prints that have overhangs. Increases the quality of these types of prints.
Terms for Printing
Infill Percentage
Infill is the support structure inside your object.
Higher percentage will make your print denser, while a 0% will be hollow

Terms for Printing
Number of Shells
Shells are the outer layers that make up the surface of your prints. Adding more shells does not affect its external dimensions, but can make your object stronger.

Terms for PrintingLayer Height & Print Resolution
Layer Height, also known as Print Resolution, changes the surface quality of a 3D print.
Lower Resolution = thicker layers, faster print, rough surface
Higher Resolution = thin layers, longer print time, smooth surface

Terms for PrintingSlicing: A slicer is the software package used to divide a 3D model into flat layers, which are then printed one at a time. The output of a slicer is G-code that controls the path, speed, and temperature of the printer.

PLA vs ABSThese are the two main types of filament used in FDM
PLA - Polylactic Acid ABS - Acrylonitrile-Butadiene Styrene
Passing Fad?3D Printing has been around since the mid 1980’s and is also known as Additive Manufacturing. Printers keep becoming more affordable and many are available for the average consumer. There are a few different types of additive manufacturing.
SLA
Stereolithography
Printing using from liquid resin with a light source to
solidify the material
SLS
Selective Laser Sintering
Printing using a laser to melt and solidify layers of
powdered material
FDM
Fused Deposition Modeling
Printing using a string of solid material (filament)
SLA
Stereolithography
Super smooth finish, requires post processing.
SLS
Selective Laser Sintering
Big variety of materials, great resolution, very
expensive.
FDM
Fused Deposition Modeling
Medium print quality, but inexpensive and no post
processing.
Passing Fad?
3D Printing has been growing over the years and and in very recent history, sales have grown exponentially.

LET’S Get Hands On! Speedy Architect
Project Pack:
Straws
Connector Pack
MakerFaire Robot
10 minutes
Goal: Build a structure for your robot to sit on
NO WRONG ANSWERS!
Let creativity guide you!
Solve a problemExamples:
Bushing
R/C Airplane Engine Mount
Lego Pieces
Some of the most productive projects we have had students complete have been to solve a problem at the school.
Thingiverse and Lesson Plans

Assign Small Groups
20 minutes to create structure
Demonstrate Structure
Discuss what would have been better
Teach TinkerCAD
Groups Design Parts
Print Parts and Build
Thingiverse and Lesson Plans

Counted the number of each letter used in class
Printed the necessary number of each
Put letters on table, instruct students to spell their names
Put all names on tables, have class identify everyone’s names

Students discuss historical figures that would deserve to be on Mt. Rushmore
Use Sculptris to create a new face
Add face to Mt. Rushmore model in TinkerCAD
Print using MakerBot Print
Thingiverse and Lesson PlansGrade 8 students are going to Washington D.C.
Have them research the monuments they will be visiting
Build Monument in TinkerCAD
Print using MakerBot Print
Have students take print with them on trip, take picture in front of actual monument with their creation.
