Enhance resistance to pod borer by combining different mechanisms of resistance from the cultivated and the wild species
• Promising F6 progenies from C. arietinum (ICC 506) x C. reticulatum (IG 72933) will be further evaluated for resistance to pod borer.
• Seven C. arietinum (JG 130, JAKI 9218, JG 11, KAK 2, JGK 1, ICC 17109, ICC 506) x C. reticulatum (IG 72933) crosses will be advanced to F3.

drought-prone areas of SSA and SA
Workplan for India
Improving the availability of quality seed and linking formal and informal seed sectors
• About 150 t breeder seed and 600 t other classes of seed (foundation, certified and TL) will be produced by project partners
• About 400 farmers will be trained as seed growers and each farmer will be provided 15 to 25 kg quality seed to promote informal seed system.
• About 20 farmers from selected villages in Andhra Pradesh will be linked to APSSDC or NSC for production of Foundation/Certified seed.
• Two Seed Producing Farmers’ Groups will be established in Karnataka and linked to KSSC and NSP of UAS-Raichur.
Enhancing local capacity to produce, deliver, store and market seed
• Training of farmers, NGOs and extension officials in seed production, processing, storage and marketing
• Training of local seed traders in proper seed handling and storage
• Publication of chickpea seed production manual in English and local languages (Telugu and Kannada)
Enhancing local-level awareness of improved varieties (demand creation)
• TV talks • Radio talks • News and popular articles in local newspapers • Field days • Farmer Fairs • Distribution of seed samples
