Tax relief for giftsof shares in the UK
If you donate shares to a UK charity, you can claim income tax relief of 40% or 22%.
In addition, you will not pay any Capital Gains Tax, which you might have had to pay if you had sold the shares instead.

A gift of shares worth £1,000
£1,000 less £400 tax relief costs a 40% taxpayer £600 and no Capital Gains Tax.
Nothing further for the charity to claim.
A gift of £1,000 cash by Gift Aid
£1,000 less 18% marginal tax relief costs a 40% taxpayer £820.
Charity can claim £280 in Gift Aid.
