Full redundant architecture, inc. LAN switches & power supplies
Enhanced maintainability for all components
All components are hot replaceable (processors, power supply, fan,
switches, management)
Full monitoring via the NMS (component failure, temp level etc.)

Main Components:
HSP – Hub Satellite Processor
DPS – Data Protocol Server
VPP – Voice Packets Processor
DCAS – DAMA Call Allocation Server

PowerEdge Main ComponentscPCI Management
The cPCI Management card is used for managing the
cPCI cage. It communicates with all the cards via the
cPCI internal bus
The cPCI cage is fully redundant. Each card is connected
to both Switch blades
19
Voice Packets Processor (VPP)
Routes of voice packets between VSATs (receivers) and media gateway
Sends voice packets directly to IPE
DAMA Call Allocation Server (DCAS)
Receives requests for satellite voice recourses from VSATs & VPP and sends the requests to the CSRM at the HSP
Data Protocol Server (DPS)
Interfacing the user servers at the hub side
Full IP protocol support & performs TCP acceleration
Hub Satellite Processor (HSP)
Centralized satellite resource manager (CSRM) for data and telephony inbound traffic
Management and control over the receiver cage and sync device

The HSP card works with the following sub-components:
Hub Receivers Unit (HRU)
Synchronization Device
The Hub Receivers Unit and the Synchronization Device are managed by
the HSP and their software is downloaded from the HSP using TFTP
21
PowerEdge Main Components Data Protocol Server (DPS)
The DPS serves as an interface between the customer’s IP network
and the SkyEdge satellite network
It connects on one side to the customer’s IP network, and optionally to
the internet, and on the other to the HSP/IPE

PowerEdge Main Components Dynamic Call Allocation Server (DCAS)
The DCAS is a Dynamic Call Allocation Server for the
SkyEdge system - It functions as a satellite telephony switch
There is one active DCAS per network
The DCAS is responsible for:
Call handling
Communicating with the CSRM for resource allocation
Number manipulation
Call Data Records (CDRs)
The DCAS is connected to the following components:

PowerEdge Main Components Voice Packets Processor (VPP)
The VPP is the voice packet handler of the SkyEdge system
The main function of the VPP is to route voice packets between
VSATs & Media Gateway for calls from/to the PSTN, or between the
VSATs (in double hop)

Hub Receiver Unit (HRU)
The Hub Receiver Unit (HRU) processes Inbound signals and transmits
them over the LAN to the HSP, DPS or VPP
The HRU is a VME-bus chassis composed of:
A Controller card
Up to 18 inbound Receiver Cards
A Power splitter panel
Up to 6 receiver cages per HSP:
The receivers support GMSK Modulation
2 receivers per board
Maximal receiver rate is 840ksps
The HRU is connected to the following components:
Sync Device, HSP, VPP, LNB down converter splitter panel
25
Synchronization Device
Inbound transmission is based on slotted ALOHA, mandating VSATs & HUB synchronization to a common time base
The Synchronization Device sends synchronization signals to the VSATs & the HRU
The Sync device is connected to the following components:
Data LAN
Rx cage

IP Encapsulator (IPE)
The IP Encapsulator (IPE) receives IP packets and converts them into MPEG2 transport stream
The IPE uses two types of encapsulation:
MPE (Multi Protocol Encapsulation) for user data and system control
Data piping for the voice packets

Modulator
The Modulator receives the MPEG2
transform stream from the IPE and
converts it into a DVB-S modulated stream
It is also responsible for the Outbound
Forward Error Correction (FEC)
Newtec:
QPSK modulation
Agile 70MHz IF output
FEC Code Rates: 1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8

Media Gateway
The Media Gateway is the main interface of the SkyEdge
network with the terrestrial telephony network.
Located at the hub and equipped with an E1 interface, the
Media Gateway supports up to 30 simultaneous calls.
As many as 256 Media Gateway units can be supported by
the SkyEdge hub.
