PD Measurement

• WHAT? • WHY? • HOW?

What is Partial Discharge? According IEC 60270 partial discharge (PD) “localized electrical discharge that only partially bridges the insulation between conductors and which can or can not occur adjacent to a conductor”

Why do we measure PD? According IEC 60034-27-2: “For many years, the measurement of partial discharges (PD) has been employed as a sensitive means of assessing the quality of new insulation as well as a means of detecting localized sources of PD in used electrical winding insulation arising from operational stresses in service”

PD comes from different factors

TEAM stresses of the insulation: •Thermal, temperature •Electrical, electric field •Ambient (environment) •Mechanical, vibrations

How do we measure PD?

• Off-line measurement • On-line measurement
