2.3 Carbon Compounds

Carbon has 4 valence electrons so they are strong covalent bonds with many other elements including itself

Carbon-carbon bonds

The Chemistry of Carbon

Macromolecules (giant molecules)

Made from thousands or hundreds of thousands of smaller molecules

Four major groups of macromolecules

1. Carbohydrates (monosaccharide)-compounds made up of carbon, hydrogen, & oxygen atoms. Living things need these for energy.

Foods: pasta, bread, fruits

Ex: glucose, lactose, fructose.

2. Protein (amino acid)-regulates cell processes, helps fight diseases, gives structural support.

Ex: meats, peanut butter, egg whites, beans, nuts

Found in hemoglobin, enzymes

3. Lipids (glycerol, fatty acids)

-stores energy-long term, insulation, layer of protection

Ex: oils, butter

Found in: steroids, wax paper, cholesterol

4. Nucleic Acids (nucleotides)-RNA/DNA (heredity information)

Found in steak, salad (foods)

1. Color each organ a different color

2. Cut, glue, & label organs (ONE AT A TIME) to correct locations

3. On back of body, write the functions of organs:Mouth large intestineEsophagus liverStomach pancreasSmall intestine gall bladder

Digestive Man (p. 876-879)
