Main goals

The main goal of #ActInSpace is for the participants to meet during 24 hours and to answer a challenge provided by the organizers. The topic of the challenge is the use of space technologies in the everyday life. Candidates are gathered in teams of 5 persons max.

The objectives of the competition are :

• To promote entrepreneurial spirit and innovative idea among young Europeans ; • To spread the idea that space can be a strong catalyzer for innovation, with important perspectives in terms

of business development and job creation beyond the space industry ; • To contribute to technology transfers and spin-offs from space technologies and space-acquired data ; • To identify future candidates who might join a European Space Agency Business Incubation Center in the

future.

The winning team should also have the potential to apply for incubation at one of the ESA Business Incubation Center in the future.

*The ESA BICs (Business Incubation Centers) are designed to support the creation of startups using space technologies and/or developing downstream applications of space systems to create new services or products in non-space sectors.

Rules of the contest

Each team will present their work with software drafts, presentations and CAD models, similar to what most hackathons require.

Final evaluation criteria are still to be determined, but they should remain close to those of the first edition of #ActInSpace: • Use of space technologies and/or data (mandatory) • Innovative aspect and creativity of the project • Expected gains in terms of job creation and service provision • Pertinence and validity of the business model, expected ability to achieve profitability • Jury’s favorite

June 17, 2015 (4 pm-6 pm) Kick-off meeting #ActInSpace 2 at the Paris Air Show 2015

March, 2016 Registration

May 20-21, 2016 (3 pm) Step 1: 24 hour-long hackathon, each team will have to be under the

supervision of an expert mentor

May 21, 2016 (4 pm) Presentation of the projects to the regional jury

May 21, 2016 (5 pm) Regional award ceremony

TBD by participating

Step 2 (optional): 24-hour hackathon at the national level, presentation of

the projects to a national jury followed by the national award ceremony

June-July 2016 Step 3: French national final, followed by the European final and award

ceremony at the Toulouse Space Show 2016

201 participants, with students making up to 67% of the candidates May 23 and 24, 2014 : regionals competitions July 1, 2014 : National Final and Gala Party and the Toulouse Space Show

The winning team won a trip to French Guiana to attend a rocket launch

Feedback All candidates were very enthusiastic about the event, the team composition, the quality of the challenges, the availability of the coaches and the logistical organization.

10 potential start-ups were identified 98% of polled candidates said they were willing to take part to another edition of the event The 5 cities present in the first edition will be present on the second edition

BUDGET AND HUMAN RESOURCES ESTIMATES For a city: between 2.000 EUR (20 candidates) and 7.000 EUR (100 candidates) + travel expenses of the winning team to the Grand Final in Toulouse, France.

Human ressources: 1 man/month

Central organization will not financially support cities organizations
