2018IMPACT REPORT

Families who have children facing illness or hospitalization face unique challenges day-in and day-out. One of our goals at the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware is to help alleviate the stresses of the “everyday” so that families can be well-rested and ready to focus on what matters most: their children. From breakfast to bedtime, your support allows us to provide support services to our families. While every family’s story is different, below, you will find an example of the type of day many of our families experience during their stay at our House.

Dear Friends of the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware,

It is with great pride and thanks that I present the 2018 Impact Report!

As you read this year’s report, you will be amazed by the impact that our House staff, volunteers, individual donors and local businesses had on families who we serve. In 2018, this impact meant over 1,900 family stays at the House, 9,954 families served in our Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, and an average length of stay at the House of 8 days. Since we opened our doors in 1991, the House has served over 48,000 families!

As we bring to life what we do at the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware by following the “Day in the Life” of Chandler, a boy who has grown into a terrific young man, I want to highlight important ways you impact the day-to-day lives of our families.

On behalf of the entire team of Board members, staff, and volunteers thank you to the thousands of local businesses and individuals who have supported us in the past year. The collective support of our community is what enables us to achieve our mission to serve families with seriously ill children by enabling access to medical care and providing a place that offers comfort, hope and togetherness.

With gratitude,

Perry BebermanChair, Board of DirectorsRonald McDonald House of Delaware

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRA DAY IN THE LIFE: A YEAR IN REVIEW

• Grants make special projects possible, allowing us to enhance our facilities for day-to-day guest use. We recently received a gift that allowed us to update and remodel our most popular first floor playroom. This new, interactive playroom will provide an engaging play area for patients and their siblings. After doctors’ appointments, physical therapy, or a day of cancer treatment, time spent in the play room connecting with other children can bring much-needed laughter.

• Adopt-a-Room Sponsors making a $5,000 gift help to defray one year of one Guest Room’s operating costs. Our rooms provide a quiet, private space for rest after long days at the hospital.

• Businesses and individuals not only give their money, but their time, volunteering to provide and cook meals for our families. A warm, home-cooked meal at the end of the day, or a healthy, energizing meal to start the day can make all the difference for a parent focusing on caring for their sick child.

• Business and individual volunteers perform hands-on projects, making our House a comfortable and welcoming “home” by completing projects like deep cleaning our common spaces and yard work in our outdoor spaces.

• Business and Foundation support helps maintain our van program, allowing families to get where they need go in our House and wheelchair accessible vans - whether it’s to the pharmacy, the grocery store to purchase ingredients to make a home-cooked meal, or to the hospital for an important appointment.

DEAR FRIENDS,

• A new hospitality model called Straight A Service was introduced and implemented for staff and volunteers, who received training.

• The first floor of the Ronald McDonald House was refreshed with new paint and furniture.

• A 5-year capital budget was developed indicating the need to raise $1.2mm for House improvements.

• New benefits were introduced for staff, ensuring that we can attract and retain the best talent.

• A flexible volunteer model was introduced in order to provide better service during the weekend hours.

• The Board of Directors have committed resources to increase the diversity of our staff, volunteers and Board.

Children whose families stay at Ronald McDonald Houses tend to be the sickest, have traveled the furthest distances for care, and spend the longest times in the hospital. Our Ronald McDonald House is known for our compassion and care for families with seriously ill or injured children. We operate two core programs: our Ronald McDonald House and our Ronald McDonald Family Rooms.

Our ability to provide lodging, meals and support services at both our House and Family Rooms happens because of you! We are truly grateful for your continued support as we work to keep families together and close to the care their children need.

When I have an opportunity to talk about the House with our stakeholders, I find myself saying, “It’s all about the families….” This core belief resonates with both the staff and volunteers. While each person involved at the House impacts the family in a different way, we are all dedicated to our work and our hearts are full in support of the families that need to call us their “home-away-from-home.” In the 2018 Impact Report, you will read about Chandler and his family; their story will give you a snapshot of a day in the life of just one of the 1,910 families that stayed with us last year.

In 2018 the Board of Directors and Staff worked at implementing our 5-year Strategic Plan. The plan has four pillars: Provide Superior Services to Guests, Be a Great Place to Volunteer and Work, Improve Financial Sustainability and Extend Impact to the Community. Some of our accomplishments include the following:.

At the close of 2018 our organization worked together to create a new mission statement and adopted the new mission statement in the first quarter of 2019. Our mission statement will be at the forefront of our work for 2019 and will inform organizational decisions as well as provide a connection for our board, staff and volunteers to focus on. I am proud to share the new mission statement with you:

The Ronald McDonald House of Delaware serves families with seriously ill childrenbyenablingaccesstomedicalcareandprovidingaplacethatofferscomfort, hope and togetherness.

Because of you we have been blessed with good fortune. You provide us the means necessary to deliver our programs and to fulfill our promise of comfort, hope and togetherness.

Thank you for being the power behind our work.

Warmest regards,

Pamela W. CornforthPresident and CEO

Chandler Rogers’ medical journey started seven years ago, when he was diagnosed with an intimidating condition in both name and symptoms: Nephrotic Syndrome due to Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). Chandler’s kidneys were becoming damaged and scarred, eventually leading him to go into kidney failure.

At sixteen years old, it was evident that Chandler needed a kidney transplant and treatment for FSGS. His mother Becky began research and was excited to learn that there was a nephrologist pioneering a new treatment where 100% of patients achieve remission.

Although there was hope on the horizon, the family hit a roadblock: this doctor was located in Delaware, far from their home in Louisiana; and the treatment needed to begin immediately after transplant.

“To get him the treatment he needs, we will do whatever we have to,” says Becky. For Chandler and his family, that meant that, yes, they would travel to Delaware no matter what the physical, emotional, or financial cost. Becky shares that this would have been to “either travel back and forth from Louisiana each week or get an apartment or hotel… and we probably would have gone into debt.”

After 12 weeks of pre-transplant treatment, Chandler received his new kidney, courtesy of his dad, Leigh, who was his donor.

And when the Rogers family checked in at the Ronald McDonald House, they found more than just an apartment or hotel. They found friends, support, caring, meals, and a place to be together.

“Establishing friendships with other families staying at the House has helped us be less homesick,” the family shares, mentioning that they have connected with and learned from families from all over the world during their stay. They even tried scrapple for the first time!

While Leigh was recovering from kidney surgery, the Rogers’ larger support system, which included Chandler’s older sister and his grandparents, were also able to stay at the Ronald McDonald House. They helped care for Chandler and Leigh, and provided support, comfort, and home-cooked meals.

Home-cooked meals were also important for Chandler pre-surgery because he was on a restrictive diet and Becky shares gratitude that she could prepare their own meals in the family kitchens rather than “being at the mercy of a restaurant.”

When Chandler was discharged and recovering, he enjoyed being able to “just be a kid” at the Ronald McDonald House. “I like movie nights in the movie theater and going to the teen room to play air hockey,” he shares, mentioning that he also likes escaping to the sunroom to enjoy the quiet and do homework.

The Rogers family also shares that the “little things” have made a huge impact on them. Chandler recalls how meaningful it was when the staff surprised him by placing a “Happy Birthday Chandler” sign up in the dining room on his 17th birthday; and Becky shares how touching it was when a community organization created and donated Easter Baskets for all of the kids staying at the House over the holiday weekend.

On April 13th, the family participated in the Ronald McDonald House 5K Run/Walk. Chandler was able to walk the full 3+ mile course and his family was overjoyed. “I don’t think he would have been able to do that before his transplant, even though he was a very active kid before his diagnosis,” says Becky.

Chandler is very much looking forward to getting back to being “a very active kid” by playing sports as soon as he can. And for the Rogers family, that may be sooner than expected! Chandler was cleared for discharge on May 7, weeks before they were scheduled, and the Rogers family went home to Louisiana.

In addition to getting back to playing sports, Chandler can’t wait to spend plenty of time with his friends and family, and enjoy his upcoming senior year of high school.

We Care in Delaware Society

The We Care in Delaware Society is named in honor of the very first group of caring individuals who had a vision in 1986 to build a Ronald McDonald House in Delaware. Among those individuals were Len and Dora Dukart, Barbara Brown, Rick Gessner, John Healy, Tom Ferry, Nick Cerchio, George Levitt, David and Nancy Colley, Les and Barbara Dukart, Michael Norman M.D., Robert Doughty M.D., and Rita Meek M.D.

This society honors individual donors who have made a gift of $250 or more for five or more consecutive years. Because of their steadfast support we have been able to make a significant difference in the lives of families with seriously or chronically ill or injured children. All of the We Care in Delaware Society members have a star next to their name in the impact report listing.

Ronald McDonald House of Delaware

LEGACY GIVING SOCIETYThroughout the history of the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware many individuals have demonstrated their generosity by supporting the House on an annual basis. Today, the House calls on its friends to continue their annual support, but to also help secure our future. With a legacy gift to the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware, you can enjoy financial and tax benefits – and also safeguard the House’s future so we can keep families

together and close to the care they need.

Rick and Cindy Rowland understand the heartbreak of loss. After their newborn son passed away at only five days old, support came in many ways for the Rowlands. They were surrounded by friends and family and their church community. Their son would have been 33 years old this year.

After their son’s death, Rick was seeking a way to make an impact in his community. “As a business leader, I volunteered around the community and was giving philanthropically, but felt I was ‘giving to get’ rather than ‘giving to give’,” says Rick. In 2004, Rick was introduced to the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware and found a home at the House getting involved with his whole heart! As a member of the Finance Committee, Advisory Council and ultimately Board Chair, Rick saw the importance of financial support at the House.

This is why Rick and Cindy decided to make a Legacy Gift: to secure the future of the House. Since 2013, they have been members of our Legacy of Hope Society, a group of supporters who have committed to sustaining the future of the House by naming us as a beneficiary in their will. The Rowlands firmly believe that making a Legacy Gift is an easy way to ensure future support of the House and the families who will stay here in years to come.
