• New By-law passed in February 2018 after consultation with the Region and the other lower-tier municipalities
• Removed from the City’s Sign By-law to make it easier for Candidates and Staff to use
• Applies to all election (municipal, provincial and federal)• Goal: Attempted to make the various By-laws as similar as
possible (sign size, fees, number of signs and start dates)

When?Registered Candidates in a municipal election or by-
election can erect Election Signs 28 days prior to the Voting Day on City, private and Regional property provided the proper permits have been obtained

Where?• One (1) Election Sign is permitted on private property,
provided that the property owner, tenant, or occupant of the property consents
• No more than two (2) Election Signs per registered Candidate or Third Party are permitted at any designated intersection
• No Election Sign should interfere with the safe operation of vehicular traffic or impair the safety of pedestrians

How?• No portion of an Election Sign shall be located within
three (3) metres of the curb, the edge of the travelled highway, or the shoulder of the Highway
• No portion of an Election Sign shall be located within one (1) metre of a sidewalk
• Election Signs shall be erected within fifty (50) metres of the corner, but shall not be erected within the sight triangle

Election Campaign Headquarters• Each Candidate is permitted to use signage permitted
under the City’s Sign By-law, except for mobile, portable, and banner signage at one designated Election Campaign Office
• An Election Sign, displaying the words “ Campaign Headquarters” may be placed on private property
• Forty-two (42) days prior to voting day Election Signs may be placed in windows of the portion of the building occupied by the registered Election Campaign Office

• From September 24th to October 1st Staff will be patrolling the City and any Signs found in contravention; the Candidate will be notified and asked to correct
• As of October 1st, any sign found in contravention will impounded and a Service Fee of $25 will be applied
• A weekly report will be sent of any signs impounded• All signs impounded by the City will be held and NOT
returned until after the Election• Candidate will be advised of where an when they can be
retrieved

• The City administers and enforces both the Regional and the City’s Election Sign By-laws
• The Regional Election Sign By-law allows you to place up to two (2) signs per designated intersections and the City allows you to place up to two (2) signs per designated intersections as well as on private property
• The Cost per permit is $250 each and payable to the City of Markham
