2017ApplicationProcess&TimelineTheapplicationprocessfortheGates,Rhodes,Marshall,Mitchell,andChurchillScholarshipcompetitionshasasingleimportantpurpose:tomaximizethelikelihoodthatHopkinsstudentsaretrulycompetitiveforthesescholarships.Thesefivescholarshipsarehandledtogetherforseveralreasons.Theyallseekapplicantsofsimilarlyhighquality;andapplicantsareofteninterestedinapplyingfortwo,threeormorescholarshipsinthisgroup.Althoughstudentsmaybeinterestedinaparticularscholarshipfromthestart,wedonotidentifyorselecta‘Gatesapplicant’ora‘Mitchellapplicant’initially.(TheChurchillisdifferentinbeingopenonlytoSTEM-fieldapplicants.)Theselectionprocessbeginsbyidentifyingstudentswhocouldbecompetitiveforatleastoneofthesescholarships.Astheprocesscontinues,wediscusswhichscholarship(s)bestfitaparticularapplicant’sprofile.TheRhodes,Marshall,Mitchell,andChurchillallrequireauniversityendorsement,andapplicantsfortheseawardsmustworkthroughourcampusprocess.TheGatesdoesnotfallintothiscategory:applicantsmayapplydirectly,butweencouragethemtoworkthroughthecampusprocessbecauseoftheadvisingandresourceswecanoffer.Thebasictermsandeligibilityofeachscholarshiparesummarizedbelow.Forfurtherdetails,pleaseseetherespectivescholarshippagesunderthelistoffellowships(http://studentaffairs.jhu.edu/fellowships/list-of-fellowships/)onourwebsiteaswellastheofficialwebsitesofeachscholarship.ScholarshipTerms&EligibilityTheGatesCambridgeScholarshipsupportsone,two,orthreeyearsoffull-timestudyatCambridgeUniversity.MaybecitizensofanycountryoutsideoftheUK.Agerestriction:none.Fieldofstudyopen,butapplicantsmustmakeaconvincingargumentthattheirqualificationsandaspirationsaccordwithaparticularpostgraduatedegreeatCambridge.95Scholarshipsareawardedeachyear(40toUScitizens).GPAof3.7+tobecompetitive.TheRhodesScholarshipfullyfundstwoyearsofgraduateorundergraduatestudyatOxford.MustbeaU.S.citizentoapplyasaU.S.applicant;internationalstudentsmayapplythroughtheirhomecountryapplicationprocess.GPAof3.7+tobecompetitive.Agerestriction:cannothavereachedage24atthetimeofapplication.Fieldofstudyopen.32scholarshipsareawardedintheUSeachyear.TheMarshallScholarshipfullyfundsoneortwoyearsofgraduatestudyatanyuniversityintheUK.Therearealimitednumberofone-yearscholarships.GPAof3.7+tobecompetitive.MustbeaUScitizen.Agerestriction:applicantsareonlyeligibletoapplywithintwoyearsof

• Pre-applicationmaterialsareduefromprospectiveapplicantsbyMarch27th.TheseincludeanunofficialJHUtranscript,CVwithphoto,andcompletedpre-applicationform).Youmaydownloadthepre-applicationinstructionsandformfromtheGates,Rhodes,Marshall,MitchellorChurchillScholarshipspagesonourwebsite.

• Studentswithsufficientlystrongrecordsandrefereeswillbeinvitedtoabriefinterviewwiththeselectioncommittee;atthispointwe’relookingforqualitiesnecessaryforsuccessfulinterviewing(interpersonalskills,abilitytoaddressarangeoftopics,connectiontotheworldoutsideofacademicstudies,sheerlikability).Theselectioncommitteedecideswhichapplicantshavebeenselectedtoproceedintheapplicationprocess.

• Studentswhoareapprovedtoapplymustattendaone-hourGRMMCworkshopin

early/midMay.

Applicationphase:mid-May–August

Pre-writingphase:

• Wewillmeetregularlywithindividualcandidatestodiscusschoosingacademicprogram(s)intheUK,confirmingtheselectionoflettersofrecommendation,articulatingleadershipexperiences,andotherpreparatoryworktohelpyouidentifywhichawardsyoushouldapplyfor.

• YouwillmeetwithfacultyadvisorstodiscussyouracademicplansandspecificgraduateprogramsintheUK.

• BytheendofMay,youwillsubmitan“intenttoapplychart”thatindicateswhichscholarshipprogramsmostcloselyalignwithyourinterestsandwhy.

• ApplicantswillworkinsmallgroupstodiscussandrevisetheirCVs,whichisrequiredinsomeformforalloftheseawards.

• FromlateMaythroughearlyJuly,applicantswillparticipateinpersonorviaSkypeinourGRMMCjuntosessions.Theaimofthesepopularweeklygatheringsistobuildyourcohortexperience;helpyoutobecomemoreinformedaboutUS,UK,andglobaleventsinpreparationforfinalistinterviews;andworkonhowtoexpressyourideasconciselytoawideacademicaudience.

Writingphase:

• Draftswillbedueonaregularbasisandyouwillfrequentlyreviseessays.Eachscholarshiphasmultiple,specificdeadlinesthroughoutJulyandAugust.

• Applicantswillbepairedwithcommitteemembersfordirectfeedbackontheapplication.

• Ifapplicants’writtenmaterialshavenotdevelopedasexpected,theywillnotbeallowedtoproceed.Applicantsmakinggoodprogress–westrivetomakesurethateveryoneisinthiscategory–willbeformallynominatedtorepresentJHU.
