CurrentYearGoals&Outcomes

Thissectionasksyoutoprovidedetailsaboutthestatusofyourdepartment’sgoalsandoutcomesforthispastyear.Pleaselimityourresponsetothespaceprovidedinthetextboxesbelow.

Duringthe2016-2017academicyearthemusicdepartmentfacultyandstudentsweredisplacedfromtheirhometoallowforamajorinteriordemolitionandrenovationoftheMusicCenter.

• Duringthistimeperiodtheprimarygoalofthemusicdepartmentwastomaintainbusinessasusual,offerallofthecoursesthatarepartofourprogram,andfocusasmuchaspossibleonrecruitingstudentsforthecomingacademicyear.

• Allmusiccoreprogramcoursesweresuccessfullyofferedduringthe16-17academicyear.

• Musicstudentswereservedinanumberofdifferentlocationsaroundcampus.o DataCenter–facultyoffices,mostteachingstudios,practicerooms,andthe

o ScienceCenterAuditorium–rehearsalspaceforJazzEnsemble,JazzCombo,andPercussionEnsemble.ThisspacewasalsousedforInstrumentalPerformanceClass

o ATCAuditorium–ThisspacewasutilizedforFallandWinterSemesterJazzNightPerformances

o SaintCeciliaMusicCenter–ThisspacewasutilizedforbothvoiceandpianoPerformanceClassaswellasfinalperformancejuriesforallmusicmajors.FallandwintersemesterhonorsrecitalsaswellassophomorerecitalswerealsoheldintheSaintCeciliaRoyceAuditorium

o FountainStreetChurch–Thislocationincludedthechoralrehearsalroomonthe3rdfloorandthechapelonthefirstfloor.Mostofourperformanceensemblesrehearsedinthesetwolocations.Theseincluded:CollegeChoir,ConcertChoir,WindEnsemble,andCollegeOrchestra.

o TheStudentCenterMultipurposeRoom–ThislocationwasutilizedforrehearsalsofourCommunityOrchestra-KentPhilharmonicOrchestra.

• TheMusicDepartmentFacultyparticipatedinthefollowingrecruitmentactivitiesduringthen16-17academicyear.

• ThemusicdepartmentfacultypreparedandpresentedtheFacultyRecitalonSeptember16th,2017.Theprimaryfocusofprofessionaldevelopmentforthefacultyiscenteredonthestudyandpreparationofthisrepertoireandcollaborativeperformance.

DepartmentalAdvisingPlan&Outcomes

Inthissection,pleasedescribeyourdepartment’sadvisingplanandoutcomesforthisyear.Pleaselimityourresponsetothespaceprovidedinthetextboxesbelow.

TheMusicDepartmentFull-timeFacultyareassignedapproximatelytwentymusicmajorseachastheirprimaryadvisees.Thefacultyscheduleappointmentseachsemestertoexaminetheacademicplansofthesestudentsanddeterminethebestoptionsforsemesterenrollment.EachsemestertheMusicDepartmentholdsanacademicadvisingdaywhereallfull-timefacultymeetwiththemusicmajorsandassignthemtotheirclassesforthecomingsemester.Thiscollaborativeapproachtoadvisingallowsthefacultytointeractregardingthestudent’sacademicprogressincoremusicclassesanddeterminethebestcoursechoicesforthecomingsemester.TheacademicadvisingdayswereheldonOctober4andMarch1.StudentsthatwereunabletoattendthescheduledacademicadvisingdaysmetwithKevinDobrefflateroninthesemesters.

Thishands-onapproachtoacademicadvisingallowsthemusicdepartmenttocarefullyguideeachofourmajorstowardsuccessfulcompletionoftheirprogram.Italsoallowsustodevelopgoodworkingrelationshipswithourstudentsandhelpsthemunderstandhowmuchwevaluetheirsuccess.

ProgramAccreditationUpdates

Inthissection,pleaseprovidedetailsregardinganyprogramaccreditationorre-accreditationthatoccurredthispastyear,ifapplicable.Pleaselimityourresponsetothespaceprovidedinthetextboxesbelow.

TheMusicDepartmentreceivednotificationfromtheNationalAssociationofSchoolsofMusicinJanuarythatthecommissiononcommunitycollegeaccreditationhadacceptedourprogressreportontherenovationofthemusiccenter.Thecommissiondeterminedthattherenovationofthebuildingandspecificallytheworkcompletedtoredesigntherecitalhallhadmetthespecificstandardsrequiredforcompletionofthere-accreditationprocess.TheMusicDepartmentcontinuestoholdaccreditationingoodstandingwithNASMandisscheduledforanotheraccreditationreviewduringthe2024-2025academicyear.GRCCcontinuestobetheonlycommunitycollegeinMichiganwithNASMaccreditation.

Inthissection,pleaseoutlineyourdepartment’sadvisingplanfortheupcomingacademicyear.Pleaselimityourresponsetothespaceprovidedinthetextboxbelow.

• Themusicdepartmentprogramdirectormeetswithallincomingmusicmajorsandcertificatestudentsfortheirinitialacademicadvisingappointment.Atthistimethestudent’scompletethemusictheoryandpianopretests.Studentsarethenenrolledinclassesbasedontheirabilitytobegincollegelevelmusicstudy.

• Theprogramdirectorthenassignsallmusicmajorsandcertificatestudentsasadviseestooneofthefull-timemusicfacultymembers.Theseprofessorsmeetwitheachoftheiradviseesatleastonceduringboththefallandwintersemesters.

• Inaddition,eachsemesterthemusicdepartmentholdsanacademicadvisingdaypriortothedatesforopenenrollment.Allmusicstudentsarerequiredtoattendthiseventwherethefull-timemusicfacultyevaluatetheiracademicstandingandtheyaresubsequentlyenrolledintheproperclassesforthenextsemester.

• DeboraDeWittservedasajudgeforcompetitionsheldatAquinasCollege,GreatLakesChristianCollege,HopeCollege,GrandValleyStateUniversity.

• JaredStaub-servedasajudgefortheIndianaStateMusicAssociationOrganizationalcontestonMarch17-18.

• KevinDobreff–completedhisfinaltermasamemberofthecommissiononcommunitycollegeaccreditationfortheNationalAssociationofSchoolsofMusic.

• TimothyHeldt–passedhisre-certificationforupdatinghisAvidCertifiedInstructorCertificationfromProTools11toProTools12.
