I. INTRODUCTION
THE OUTSTANDING THOMASIAN ALUMNI (TOTAL) Award is the highest honor bestowed by the University of Santo Tomas (UST) and the UST Alumni Association, Inc. (USTAAI) upon the Thomasian Alumni, in recognition of their significant and exemplary contribution to the society and the Church.
The conferment of the TOTAL Award commenced in 1993 and continued as as an annual event until 2009, when the University and the UST Alumni Association, Inc. agreed to grant the Award every other year. Through the years, TOTAL has continued to draw inspiration from all stakeholders of the Thomasian community, as it likewise inspires the Thomasian students, the future Alumni and Alumnae of the University, towards the pursuit of excellence in their academic as well as spiritual and moral formation.
The following SPECIAL AWARDS are likewise conferred during the TOTAL Award Ceremonies: Thomasian Family Award, Young Thomasian Achiever, and the Meritorious Achievement Award.
II. AWARD AND ITS CRITERIA
A. The Outstanding Thomasian Alumni (TOTAL) AWARD
The TOTAL Award is conferred upon an Alumna/Alumnus who exemplifies the Thomasian core values in his/her respective field of expertise: competence in pioneering human endeavors, commitment to his/her profession and compassion for others, particularly the marginalized in society.
*Criteria:
1. An Alumnus/Alumna of UST
The individual must have completed his/her primary or secondary or tertiary or graduate education in the University of Santo Tomas.
2. Outstanding Achievements and Exceptional Contributions
The Alumnus/Alumna must have attained prominence in his/her field of endeavor through his/her outstanding achievements and exceptional contributions to his/her field, industry or

specialization. He/she must, likewise, have contributed to the development of society, either at the national or international level.
3. Peer Recognition in the Field of Expertise
The individual must have earned peer recognition in his/her field, industry, specialization or expertise where he/she is acknowledged to be in good community and professional standing. This includes recognition by allied and civic groups (e.g. alumni associations, educational institutions, agencies and other award-giving bodies). These peer recognitions may be in the form of awards, citations and other forms of acknowledgment.
4. Exemplary Moral and Christian Conduct
The individual lives a life of moral integrity and uprightness. He/she shows exemplary moral courage, especially under adverse circumstances.
5. Loyalty to the University of Santo Tomas
The individual must have consistently taken pride in his/her heritage or roots as a Thomasian as manifested in and through his/her works, endeavors, advocacies and other opportunities where he/she affirms his/her Thomasian identity.
6. Significant Contribution to the University for the Achievement of its Vision-Mission
The Alumnus’/Alumna’s active participation and involvement in the University’s programs, projects and advocacies must have made a significant impact on the attainment of the University’s Vision and Mission and in the fulfilment of its three-fold function of teaching, research and community service.
* An Alumna/Alumnus may be nominated to only one (1) particular field/industry/specialization.
There will only be ONE (1) TOTAL AWARDEE in a given field/industry/specialization.

B. SPECIAL AWARDS
1. Young Thomasian Achiever Award
The Award is conferred upon an Alumnus/Alumna who exemplifies the Thomasian core values in his/her respective field of expertise: competence in pioneering human endeavors, commitment to his/her profession and compassion for others, particularly the marginalized in society.
*Criteria:
1. An Alumnus/Alumna of UST
The individual must have completed his/her primary or secondary or tertiary or graduate education in the University of Santo Tomas.
2. The individual must not be more than thirty-five (35) years old.
3. Outstanding Achievements and Exceptional Contributions
The Alumnus/Alumna must have attained prominence in his/her field of endeavor through his/her outstanding achievements and exceptional contributions to his/her field, industry or specialization. He/she must, likewise, have contributed to the development of society, either at the national or international level.
4. Peer Recognition in the Field of Expertise
The individual must have earned peer recognition in his/her field, industry, specialization or expertise where he/she is acknowledged to be in good community and professional standing. This includes recognition by allied and civic groups (e.g. alumni associations, educational institutions, agencies and other award-giving bodies). These peer recognitions may be in the form of awards, citations and other forms of acknowledgment.

1. Alumni of UST
All members of the family must have earned their respective Baccalaureate and/or Graduate degrees from UST.
2. Outstanding Achievements and Exceptional Contributions
Every member of the family must have attained prominence in his/her field of endeavor through his/her outstanding achievements and exceptional contributions to his/her field, industry or specialization. He/she must likewise have contributed to the development of society either at the national or international level.

3. Meritorious Award
An individual who was educated at UST, for at least two (2) years, but has not completed his/her primary, secondary or tertiary education from the University due to varying reasons is an Associate-Alumnus/Alumna. He/she may be conferred a

Meritorious Achievement Award based on the following criteria:
1. Outstanding Achievements and Exceptional Contributions
The associate must have attained prominence in his/her field of endeavor through his/her outstanding achievements and exceptional contributions to his/her field, industry or specialization. He/she must, likewise have contributed to the development of society, either at the national or international level.
2. Peer Recognition in Field of Expertise
The individual must have earned peer recognition in his/her field, industry, specialization or expertise where he/she is acknowledged to be in good community and professional standing. This includes recognition by allied and civic groups (e.g. alumni associations, educational institutions, agencies and other award-giving bodies). IV. NOMINATION PROCESS
A. Who may nominate?
1. Deans, Directors, Principals and Regents of the twenty-four (24) Faculties (Civil and Ecclesiastical), Colleges, Schools and Institutes of the University of Santo Tomas;
2. UST Administrators, Faculty Members, Support Staff and Students;
3. Recognized UST Faculty/College/School/Institute Alumni Associations;
4. Recognized Thomasian Alumni Chapters and Groups;
5. Recipients of TOTAL Award and Other Special Awards;
6. A Thomasian Alumnus or Alumna;
7. Accredited Professional Organizations (APO) and its affiliates;
8. Reputable national/international, private/public institutions.
*Exceptions: Nomination/s for the following may originate from any Faculty/College/School/Institute of the University: a) Business; b) Humanitarian Service; c) Service to the Church; d) Education; e) Ecological/Environmental Conservation; f) Entrepreneurship; g) Government/Public Service; h) Humanities; i) Media; j) Performing Arts; and, k) Sports.

B. Ineligibility
The incumbent officers, members of the Board of Trustees of the UST Alumni Association Inc. and all Presidents of recognized UST Faculty/College/School/Institute Alumni Associations and Members of the TOTAL Award Screening Committee, including the Members of their immediate families such as their parents, siblings, spouse and children, are ineligible, and are therefore, disqualified from being nominated.
C. What are the Guidelines to follow?
1. Nominations should be made using the prescribed TOTAL Award Nomination Form available at the UST Office of Alumni Relations and the office of the USTAAI. Forms may likewise be downloaded via www.alumnirelations.ust.edu.ph
2. The Nominator must submit an original copy (Nomination Portfolio) and an electronic or digital version of the Nomination Portfolio, which contains the following:

a. Duly accomplished Nomination Form;
b. Nominee’s curriculum vitae with his/her most recent 2x2 photo;
c. Written acceptance of the candidate of his/her nomination;
d. Executive Summary of the Nominee’s achievements, not to exceed three (3) pages with encoded texts using Font (Times New Roman), size 12 on a legal-size bond paper;
e. Attachments (i.e. diploma / transcript of record / letter or certificate) with their appropriate texts, encoded using Font (Times New Roman), size 12 on a legal-size bond paper, should not exceed twenty (20) pages;
f. Artworks (Painting, Sculpture, etc.) may be photographed and included in the candidate’s portfolio, where applicable.
3. The Nomination Portfolio (using long expandable envelope), containing the above-mentioned documents, should be submitted to:

4. Only complete and duly accomplished Form and supporting documents (original copy; and, electronic and digital version) received within the period prescribed in the Call for Nominations, shall be accepted and forwarded to the TOTAL Award Screening Committee.

V. SELECTION PROCESS
1. The selection process begins with an extensive preliminary appraisal of the Nominees’ profiles by a Screening Committee, the members of which are composed of the following:
a. Chairperson of the Screening Committee selected by the USTAAI, with the concurrence of the Father Rector;
b. Three (3) members of the USTAAI designated by its President;
c. Two (2) recipients of the TOTAL Award selected by the UST and the USTAAI;
d. Secretary-General of the University;
e. Ecclesiastical Adviser of the UST AAI; and,
f. Director of the UST Office of Alumni Relations.
2. After thorough evaluation and deliberation on the Nominees for the Award, the roster of identified Candidates for the TOTAL Award and other Special Awards will then be submitted by the Screening Committee to the Board of Trustees of the UST Alumni Association, Inc. (USTAAI).
3. The USTAAI Board of Trustees conducts a final review of the Candidates for the AWARD. Should the Board deem it necessary, it may invite the Nominee to be present in person and defend his/her qualification for the Award.
4. The USTAAI Board of Trustees shall submit the Roster to the Office of the Father Rector, for his final approval.
5. The Office of the Rector shall then inform the Recipients of the TOTAL Award and other Special Awards, through a letter, of their selection, not later than three (2) months from the date of the Awarding Ceremony.
6. There may be occasions where Awards may not be given in all fields/industry/ specialization, as there may be no nominees, or, the nominees may not have met the criteria for granting the Award.

VI. APPLICABILITY and EFFECTIVITY
This AMENDED Primer on THE OUTSTANDING THOMASIAN ALUMNI (TOTAL) Award covers the Alumni Associations of all Colleges/Faculties/Schools/Institutes of the University, as well as the Alumni Chapters and Groups, locally and abroad.
This PRIMER takes effect on September 14, 2015, as approved by the UST Alumni Association, Inc. (USTAAI) and the UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS (UST).
