STEAM Program

• Yes: Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, etc.• Also: No lectures or tests,

projects and rubrics instead• Most important: NO subjects! • Completely different roles for

teachers and everybody• Cannot forget that students

must be prepared for this too

History

STEAM: A whole lot more than just using computers!

Change Management Principles

• If change is going to work, it’s the people who have to change• Coaches can’t be all positive or

negative re: skills• Leadership must come from:

the top, all levels (delegation) • Resistance is inevitable and

must be part of the plan• Use strengths to overcome

weaknesses

Changing Focus First

• WHO people are instead of WHAT people do• Not just a matter of training re:

using hardware/software• We (they!) need to redefine what

it means to be a teacher• Getting Teachers to Rethink

Their Roles – Horizon Report challenge tweak

Here’s what we need to happen:

Techie!

We might think it’ll be like this:

Actually it’ll be more like this:

Change Management Process

• Leaders MUST identify the goal, convey it’s mandatory• Explain the reasons why clearly

and logically (remember CRM!)• Define current/desired states• Identify reasons for resistance• Delegate/divide and conquer• Then it’s just another set of

projects with cycles!

Pick CMT

Follow plan

Evaluate, refine

Make decision

Change Management Cycle

Define states

OK, you’re the leader!

What do you say/do to get started?

• ?• ?• ?• ?• ?

OK, you’re the leader!

What do you say/do to get started?• By 2018, this is where we will be,

this is where you will fit in• The reasons: more effective

education, market competition, BOD/parent choice, etc.• Discussion is over, decision is

final: we’re not taking a vote! • Must serve as model for all

Who do you want on your CMT?

• ?• ?• ?• ?• ?

Who do you want on your CMT?

• Leaders must be united front• Ideally, a Director or Asst. with

only STEAM Program duties• Technology Integration Coach

(geek-teacher/student liaison)• Technical Support Folks• Subject Team Leaders• Student reps? Maybe SGA or

special Geek Squad (preferred)

Divide, Delegate, Define States

Teacher Certification Project• Technology Integration Coach• PBL/Other Trainers/Teachers• Surveys/interviews for current• Hardware/Software Skills

Checklist, prioritized• ISTE Standards for higher level• Carrots: Badges, recognition,

levels, etc.

The Geeky Teacher (and Students!)

Resistance Statements?

• ?• ?• ?• ?• ?

Resistance Statements?

• I don’t have time/resources. • If I change, my students won’t

need/respect/whatever me.• I won’t know how to manage my

classroom (aka loss of control).• Can I be a good teacher if I’m

not omniscient/omnipotent/etc.?• I just don’t know any other way!

Change Management

• Consider the human factor, not just budget, HW/SW, etc.

• Define new state, explain how they’ll be helped getting there

• They have time, but no more excuses: jobs are at stake

• Ultimately, this is about the customers: parents/students

• Must have schedule/resources!

ISTE Standards Examples

For Teachers• Promote digital citizenship• Model digital-age working• Design digital-age assessments

For Students• Be good digital citizens• Do digital-age working! ;)• Participate in all the processes

GT/S!

PBL, Other Skills

ISTE Standards

Computer Skills

Hierarchy of Needs Analogy

Online and Onground Training

For Teachers and Students• Onground depending on topic• Best is 3D GameLab structure

for gamification: badges, levels• MOOCs or at least LMSes for

overall topic organization, teacher collaboration, etc.• WizIQ: whoever can attend

does, others view recordings
