State of Georgia

• Two of the many laws passed by the Georgia Legislature have an effect on your ability to coach– HB 284 : Concussions– HB 1176 : Mandatory Reporter

House Bill 284

– Creates protocols for informing parents about the dangers of concussions and for identifying and treating players with head injuries.

– Requires any student in a public or private k-12 school who shows signs of a concussion to be removed from practice and games and would not be able to return until a doctor says it is safe.

– Public sports leagues are also required to provide concussion forms to parents and guardians and encouraged to apply the policies to their programs.

House Bill 1176

– WHO: “volunteers in the public, private, for-profit and non-profit sectors that provide "care, treatment, education, training, supervision, coaching, counseling, recreational programs, or shelter to children."

– requires that an oral report be provided to DHS/DFCS within 24 hours of the time the reporter learns of the suspected abuse or maltreatment.
