4 Community Foundation of Fayette County
2015 was another great year for the Community Foundation of Fayette County (CFFC). We continue to grow and to benefit both the community and region. We now hold $15 million in assets and 150 Funds. In 2015, we awarded close to $700,000
in grants and distributions and $195,000 in scholarships to students in Pre-K through College. Since our grantmaking program began in 2001, we have distributed $4.5 million in Fayette County and the region.
This year, we started two new programs: the Fayette Philanthropy Project and the Non-Profit Leadership Series. Both have shown great success. The Fayette Philanthropy Project was initiated to create new philanthropists and to generate interest in charitable giving.
The Non-Profit Leadership Series is a comprehensive program of classes focused on non-profit education for any individual interested in non-profit management or board service.
The CFFC assists donors by helping them to maximize the benefits of
their charitable giving efforts. We provide intelligent, proven investment management and immediate tax benefits. The Foundation’s strength is based on consistent asset growth, strategic grantmaking, flexible giving options for donors and unparalleled service to the non-profit community.
The Community Foundation of Fayette County is a premier example of how a small, civic minded, organization can make a huge impact both locally and regionally. Please phone or stop in the CFFC Office to see how you can join us and make a difference, too!
I am pleased and honored to have had the opportunity to serve as Chairman of this great group.

6 Community Foundation of Fayette County
The Community Foundation of Fayette County (CFFC) was founded in 1999 by a group of community leaders including John Buchanon, Charles Cluss, Lee Frankhouser, Albert Skomra, Lynda Waggoner, the late philanthropist, Robert Eberly, Sr., and three of this region’s largest foundations – the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation, the McCune Foundation and the Richard King Mellon Foundation. It was their intent to create a charitable Foundation with a focus on Fayette County, in order to improve and enrich the quality of life for all residents, and to assist the County’s non-profit sector. The grantmaking program began in 2001.
The CFFC is led by a volunteer Board of Directors, with many having their own Funds to aid in their charitable giving. Daily operations are managed by a professional, local staff,
with decades of experience in non-profit management and development.
In 2009, the CFFC was named the Outstanding Foundation in Western Pennsylvania by the Association of Fundraising Professionals and first received National Accreditation from the Council on Foundations. In 2014, the Foundation received re-accreditation. As an accredited Foundation, the CFFC follows and applies strict professional standards and practices as set forth by the Council on Foundations and the IRS. There are over 750 community foundations in the United States, and only half are accredited.
The Foundation has grown since 1999, and our mission has expanded. We are leaders in the community and region and bring donors together to respond to both local and regional needs. Our
funding base has expanded as well. The CFFC now holds over 150 funds, approximately $15 million in assets and continues to grow.
If you would like to learn more about how you can get involved in charitable giving, please contact the CFFC at 724-437-8600, visit our website at www.cffayettepa.org or stop in the office at 2 West Main Street, Suite 101, Uniontown, PA. Today, anyone can be a philanthropist!
CFFC Vision
Fayette County has a vibrant infrastructure and is prospering from a renewed economic and social reinvention. The Community Foundation of Fayette County’s commitment to community philanthropy guides our charitable focus and provides for a healthy and prosperous Fayette County.
About the Community Foundation of Fayette County
Left to right. Eliese O’Neil, Accounting Assistant; Renee M. Couser, Director of Donor Relations; Clara L. Pascoe, Executive Director; Glenn Valdiserri, Director of Finance
What is a community foundation? Community foundations are non-profit, public charities created by and for the residents of a specific geographic area or for a specific purpose or interest. They exist to guide donors with charitable giving, assist the non-profit community, and take a leadership role in responding to regional problems and needs. Community Foundations enable everyone to engage in charitable giving.
What is the value of creating a “fund” with a community foundation? Community foundations offer donors personalized and very flexible giving options and make it easy to give!Charitable “funds” are created within a community foundation and are pooled and invested for greater financial return. Through the economy of scale, the combined resources produce better results than if invested alone. Through their “funds,” donors designate support for their favorite charities or for scholarships for deserving students. Donor recommendations are then reviewed for final approval by the CFFC Board of Directors. Non-profit organizations can establish “agency endowments” to provide sustainability for their future. A variety of “fund” types and options are available to fit any need, and every gift is 100% tax deductible, to the fullest extent allowed by law.Community Foundations are an attractive, less expensive alternative to creating a private foundation, but without the mandatory IRS reporting, accounting, fees or investment management. The Community Foundation does all the work and pays all expenses.

Non-Profit Leadership Series The Non-Profit Leadership Series is an affordable, intensive training program for those interested in non-profit management and Board service. It consists of a series of classes designed to guide and inform community leaders and to strengthen regional non-profits. The program includes detailed sessions on leadership, governance, strategic planning, grantwriting, organizational sustainability, finance, budgets, marketing and social media. A session on non-profit incorporation is also offered.Classes are taught by Rob DeOrio of DeOrio Strategies Group. Rob brings over twenty-five years experience working in the non-profit sector helping organizations to build capacity, grow fundraising, and sustain operations. Rob created DeOrio Strategies in 2013, after working for AL Brourman and Associates, the Heinz History Center and the American Ireland Fund. Rob is graduate of Duquesne University and has raised millions of dollars for the organizations he has represented.
Fayette Philanthropy Project The Fayette Philanthropy Project was initiated as an annual program to create new philanthropists, to foster interest and engage the community in charitable giving, and to honor existing philanthropists who support the CFFC. The Project includes a competition between individuals and teams to raise the most support for an existing CFFC Fund or to create a new Fund. The participants win valuable prizes, but the biggest prize is being named Fayette County’s newest philanthropist. Competitors in 2015 were Ryan Galiotto, Jim John, Gina Jones, and James Protin. Jim John won the 2015 competition and raised the most for his new Fund, the Matthew John Ryan Memorial Fund. The Eberly Foundation was honored as 2015’s Philanthropist of the Year.
Fayette Philanthropy Project Class of 2015Ryan Galiotto - The Randy D. Galiotto, Sr. Memorial Fund“To me philanthropy is about doing what you can for the community. I was inspired by my grandmother, who was always in the kitchen cooking meals for others. She would never turn anyone away.”Ryan created a Fund in honor and memory of his father. Proceeds from the Fund benefit organizations that his dad loved or was involved in including the Fayette Friends of Animals, the Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department, and the Uniontown Hospital.
Jim John – The Matthew Ryan John Memorial Fund (2015 Philanthropy Project Winner)“To me philanthropy is the willingness to give, whether it be time or money, to a cause without looking for anything in return. It is the true definition of charitable giving.” Jim’s Fund is in honor of his brother Matthew Ryan John. The Fund supports educational programming about the prevention of drug use and addiction and the consequences of destructive decisions.
Gina Jones – Lillian’s Legacy Fund “To me, philanthropy is a true example of service leadership. It is putting money and value behind your words.”
Gina started a Fund in honor of her grandmother, who had a huge heart for service. The Fund is for scholarships and career development for young women. Gina wants to encourage girls who want to make a change.
James Protin – The Protin Family – Mon Valley Community Fund“We are privileged to live in the greatest country on Earth. A country that provides countless opportunities, so it’s our obligation to return that privilege through participation in philanthropy.”James established a Fund designated for community based charitable organizations within the greater Mon Valley.
2015 Philanthropist of the Year– The Eberly Foundation The Eberly Foundation was started in 1963 by the late Orville Eberly and his wife, Ruth. The Foundation focuses on funding for education. Since their first grant in 1965, over $75 million has been awarded to non-profits in Southwestern Pennsylvania and beyond, including scholarship endowments at twenty-eight colleges and universities. The late Robert Eberly, Sr., who served as a board member and president of The Eberly Foundation, was one of the founders of the Community Foundation of Fayette County. The Eberly Foundation and CFFC have a strong partnership.

COE Distributing Charitable Giving Fund Supports the County and RegionJ.D. and Melanie Ewing started their Fund, the COE Charitable Giving Fund to assist their company’s employees with charitable giving. Current CFFC Board Chairman, Joshua Swimmer, first introduced the couple to the Foundation. “The CFFC is a good choice for charitable giving. Those who are interested in donating can select from multiple Funds. Clara Pascoe, Executive Director, and Renee Couser, Director of Donor Relations, do a tremendous job in providing guidance and helping to make potential donors understand the community foundation concept and operations,” said J.D.The COE Distributing Charitable Giving Fund has supported a variety of non-profits including Domestic Violence of SWPA, Autism Speaks of Fayette County, Fayette Friends of Animals, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation, the United Way, and City Mission – Living Stones, Inc.“We created the Fund as a way for both our employees and our family to support non-profit organizations in the community. As a plus, our company matches the donations made by our employees,” said Melanie.
J.D. and Melanie want others to know that the opportunity exists for those interested to support the future of the community and region through the Community Foundation of Fayette County. “There is a great opportunity to make an impact here to better Fayette County. So, if you want to help, the CFFC provides just that,” Melanie said.

Hughes Scholarship Fund Assists Laurel Highlands High School AthletesDavid and Pamela Hughes of Uniontown created the Hughes Family Scholarship Fund in 2015. Their Fund provides scholarships for graduating Laurel Highlands High School seniors who have participated on the soccer or swim teams. “My three kids and I have all been on the Laurel Highlands High School swim team. My two boys also played soccer in high school. So, this is why we made the decision to establish this scholarship fund,” said David. “I support the Community Foundation, because it provides a way for anyone to become a philanthropist. And, I like the fact
that all the money that CFFC raises or takes in through funds benefits the community and beyond.” David currently serves on the Community Foundation of Fayette County Board, and is a past Chairman. David has been employed at Sprowls Insurance Group, Uniontown, since 1992 and is the President of Commercial Sales.“Whatever type of Fund you choose to create, it is a great way to start a legacy. After the Fund is set up, anyone can add to it,” he added. He encourages others to support the Community Foundation. David and Pamela Hughes
Gnagey Huston Fund Helps the Community Joy Huston first started giving back to the community as a teenager, by volunteering as a candy striper at Uniontown Hospital. It was there that she developed an interest in the medical field that led her to become a pharmacist. A graduate of Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, Joy still works at a pharmacy in Uniontown once a week. She spends the other four days at the family business, Gnagey Gas & Oil.After serving on the Community Foundation’s Board of Directors, Joy thought starting a Fund would be the right thing to do. So, she established the Gnagey Huston Family Fund. “I saw all the good that is done by the Community Foundation, and I personally wanted
to contribute,” said Joy. The Gnagey Huston Family Fund supports many non-profit organizations throughout Fayette County. An example is Jumonville Retreat Center, where Joy previously served on the Board and will serve again in 2017. She also supports the Fayette County Community Action Agency. Joy stated, “I want to be able to help more people and organizations in the community with our Fund in the future.”Joy is impressed that the CFFC reaches out to so many different groups and touches so many people. “If you want to be community and civic-minded and see good things happen in Fayette County, start a Fund with the CFFC. Whether it is a Fund to help non-profits or a scholarship Fund to help young people further their education, the Community Foundation is here to help the County grow,” she added.
