Holy Water is water that has been specially Blessed by an Ordained Orthodox Bishop
or Priest and Sanctified by the Holy Spirit for use in the Holy Rites of the Eastern
Orthodox Church of Christ, including the Holy Mystery of Baptism, the Blessing of
people, places and objects or as a means of repelling evil.
A quantity of Holy Water is usually kept in a font that is placed near the entrance of
the church where it is freely available for those who need it.
Holy Water is sometimes sprinkled on items or people as a Blessing or as part of the
Prayers of Blessing. (For example, fishing boats are sprinkled with Holy Water at the
start of the fishing season - and even spaceships before launching – while theCelebrant Priest prays for the safety and success of those who travel therein.)
Orthodox Christians most often Bless themselves with Holy Water by taking three sips
each morning after their Prayers, which makes a good start to each day.
Holy Water may also be used for informal Blessings when no Clergy is present. (For
example: parents may Bless their children with Holy Water before they leave the
house for school or play.)
The use of Holy Water is based on the Great Event of Holy Theophany – the Baptism
of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, by St John the Baptist and Forerunner in the
River Jordan.
According to Orthodox Christian belief, St John the Baptist’s Baptism was a Baptism of
Repentance, and the people went to him to have their sins washed away.
However, since our Saviour, Jesus Christ, was absolutely sinless, and was Himself
Divine – being One Person of the Holy Trinity - His Immersion (Baptism) Sanctified
and Blessed the water – making it useful for its original Purpose as an Instrument
of Life.
The Great Blessing of Water is held on the Eve of Theophany – 5 January - and/or on
the Feast of Theophany – 6 January – after the Divine Liturgy.
The Great Blessing of Water commemorates our Lord Jesus Christ’s Baptism, the
Revelation of the Holy Trinity and the Orthodox belief that all Creation is Sanctified
(made Holy) by Christ Himself Who is the Almighty Creator of the Universe.
Our Lord’s Baptism is commemorated in the Orthodox Church on 6 January – the
Feast of Theophay (meaning “God shining forth”)
At Vespers of Theophany, a Font of Holy Water is Blessed, which provides Holy Water
for the requirements of the Parish throughout the y ear.
The following morning – in some Parishes – the Prayers often include a trip to a nearby
river, lake or other public source of drinking water, to Bless that water as well.
This represents the Redemption of all Creation as part of humanity’s Salvation.
In the following weeks, the Priest visits the homes of the Parishioners to Bless their entire
household by sprinkling them with Holy Water while reciting particular Prayers.
This Blessing visibly represents our Lord God’s Sanctifying Work in all parts of our lives.
Holy Water can also be Blessed at any other time of the year if there is a need, andthis is usually done on the first day of the month – particularly if it falls on a
Sunday.
The Sanctified Water of the Holy Mystery of Baptism is Blessed during the Holy Service
of Baptism and is later poured upon the earth – never in the sewerage system!
On the Feast of Holy Theophany, the water is Blessed twice – at the conclusion of the
Divine Liturgy of 5 January and 6 January.
After processing to the Soleas where the vessel of water is prepared, to the singing of
appropriate Feast Troparia, several Holy Scripture passages are read, culminating
in the reading of the Gospel According to St Mark (1:9-11), which relates the
Baptism of Christ, followed by the Great Litany, which is chanted just as for the
Divine Liturgy, but with the addional Petitions that make it perfectly clear what is

At the voice of the one cring in theWilderness: “Prepare the Way of theLord !” Thou came, O Lord, havingtaken the Form of a servant, askingfor Baptism, although Thou artsinless. The waters beheld Thee andwere afraid. The Forerunnertrembled and cried out, saying: “Howwill the Lamp Enlighten the Light - the servant place his hand on theMaster? of our race; by Thy Birth Thou hastSanctified a Virgin’s Womb.
All Creation sings praises to Thee, Who
revealed Thyself; for Thou, our God,Hallowed, also, the streams of theJordan, in that Thou sent down fromHeaven Thy Holy Spirit, and crushedthe heads of the serpents that lurkedthere.

Today He Who does not bow, bows
down to His own servants, that Hemay free us from servitude.
Today we have purchased the Kingdom
of Heaven, for the Kingdom of theLord will have no end.
Today earth and sea share the Joy of
the Universe, and the Universe has been filled with Gladness.
The waters beheld Thee, O God, thewaters beheld Thee and were afraid.
The Jordan turned back when it saw the
Fire of the Godhead descending inBodily Form and entering it.
The Jordan turnedback as it
contemplated the Holy Spirit – like adove – descending and hoveringabove Thee.
The Jordan turned back as it beheld the
Invisible made Visible – the Creatormade Flesh – the Master in the formof a servant.
The Jordan turned back and themountains leapt as they beheld Godin the Flesh, and the clouds utteredtheir voice, marvelling at what hadcome to pass, beholding Light ofLight, True God of True God – theMaster’s Festival today in the Jordan,
beholding Him drowning Death fromDisobedience, the goad of error andthe bond of Hell in the Jordan, andgranting the Baptism of Salvation tothe world.
Therefore, I, too, a sinner and Thine
unworthy servant, recount theGreatness of Thy Wonders and –
seized with Fear – incompunctioncry out to Thee:

bring Thee praise and Thanksgivinefor Thy Wondrous Mighty Worksfrom every age, and for Thy SavingDispensation in these last times.
By it Thou clothe Thyself in our weak
and beggared matter, and, comingdown to the measure of ourservitude, O King of all, Thouaccepted also to be Baptised in theJordan by the hand of a servant, sothat, having Sanctified the nature ofthe waters, Thou – the Sinless One –
might make a way for our Rebirththrough Water and Spirit, and re-establish us in our original Freedom.
As we celebrate the memory of this
Divine Mystery, we entreat Thee, OMaster – Lover of mankind: sprinkleon us, Thine unworthy servants,Cleansing Water,in accordance withThy Divine Promise, the Gift of ThyCompassion, that the request of ussinners over this Water may becomeacceptable by Thy Goodness andthat through it Thy Blessing to begranted to us and to all Thy Faithfulpeople, to the Glory of Thy Holy,
