Service of Responsibility with guest speaker Fred Gross
Westchester Reform Temple
Westchester Reform Temple is honored to welcome holocaust survivor Fred Gross to
our annual Service of Responsibility as he shares his story and how it has continued to shape his
life and experiences. Fred is the author of One Step Ahead of Hitler: A Jewish Child’s Journey
through France, and father of our congregant Adam Gross.
Fred did not know his story until he was an adult. The journey to discover his tale is best
told in his own words:
“I began the process of writing my story in 1988 in a way I knew best, having been a
reporter. I interviewed my mother. How could I ever tell it on my own? I was barely 3 years old
when Germany invaded my homeland, Belgium, in May 1940. How fortunate I was to question
my mother, who was 85 then and in failing health. She died a year later, leaving her youngest
son to memorialize her words…Before 1988 I never gave much thought to record my story. My
family rarely talked about it at home. Later, I asked my two older brothers, Sam and Leo, to
recall their memories. With that I began to write my memoir, the interviews becoming the
heart of the book. My story is not simply a running account of staying one step ahead of Hitler.
It is about a little boy getting to know his own story as a grown man. It is about discovery, to
know who I was as a child and who I am as a grown man - the consequences of my wartime
experiences then and now.”

Music and Memories
JCC on the Hudson
A concert commemorating Yom HaShoah at the JCC on the Hudson launches a week-
long series of events highlighting the Jewish community’s past and celebrating its present. The
Jewish Cultural Festival will take place from April 6-14 in a variety of area locations.
The events kick off at the JCC Saturday evening, April 6, at a concert titled “Music and
Memories”, by renowned composer-violist, the Russian-born Lev Zhurbin, also known as Ljova.
In addition to Ljova’s compositions for string quartet, the concert will include the solo piano
performance of “Sirota”, which means orphan in Russian. The latter incorporates a recording
made in 1908 in Warsaw by Cantor Gershon Sirota, who was killed during the Warsaw ghetto
uprising and is often referred to as “the Jewish Caruso”. Ljova will be accompanied by faculty
members of the JCC School of Music and Performing Arts. The evening begins with a wine and

Showing of movie La Rafle (The Roundup)
Congregation Kol Ami
At Kol Ami on April 7th at 1:00 pm: Watch La Rafle (The Roundup). On July 16, 1942,
French police carried out an extensive raid on Jews in greater Paris, resulting in the arrest of
more than 13,000 people — including 4,000 children. After spending several miserable days in
the Vélodrome d’Hiver stadium at the apex of summer with little food or water, families were
deported to internment camps elsewhere in France and then, finally, to Auschwitz. With its
emotionally astute and sensitive exploration of a long taboo subject in France — Jacques Chirac
issued a public apology to the citizens of France only in 1995 — the raid, its political backdrop
and the exquisite and poignant beauty of Paris during war time are brought to stirring life in
writer-director Rose Bosch’s new French cinema classic. Please note that this film is not
appropriate for children under 14.
