On a chilling Thursday evening early in December, the Members of the Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce got together for their Annual Cruise
aboard the 120 ft. Royal Winner Princess II. We all celebrated the beginning of another magical Holiday Season here on Pleasure Island. We had our
Annual Meeting, selected a new 2013 Board of Directors and handed out a few Thank-You’s to a few deserving individuals and organizations. Take a
minute and view some of the memories documented by our own Paul Boroznoff of Southern Digital Art.com.

The project is designed to (1) create a wider shoulder along Dow Road and (2) develop left hand turn lanes at Ocean, Cape Fear, and Harper. GRAND OPENING—SATURDAY, JANUARY 5th
How fitting that we get to open our doors along with the opening of a new year?
On January 5th, we’ll be closing the door on everything that’s come before, and opening up to the boundless possibilities before us. And, man, do we know how to celebrate new beginnings
For starters, we’ll be offering three sample classes during the day. These will be completely donation-based, with all proceeds going toward the Pleasure Island Sea Turtle Project. (Click here for the day’s class schedule!)
Then, as the sun sets, the party begins. Get ready to let loose, because we’re bringing in live music from acoustic duo Blue Tang Bandits, snacks from Surf House and a libation or two as well While the party’s on us, you’ll want to bring along some cash to purchase tickets for our charity raffle. The grand prize is a Salty Dog Yoga & Surf 3-Month Unlimited Membership and, again, it’s all for PISTP. Do it for the turtles.
Admittedly, we like to throw a good party. And what’s going to make this The Best Grand Opening Party Ever… is you. More than anything, we can’t wait to meet some of you for the first time and finally get time to really get to know those of you who’ve already helped make our experience in Carolina Beach incredible. We’re looking forward to bringing the neighborhood, the community, together in our space.
Because we firmly believe that the love you put into something is the love you’ll get out of it.
See you Saturday!
Weight Watchers is coming to the Island. They will have weekly meetings at the Carolina Beach Presbyterian Church at 1209 N. Lake Park Blvd. (next door to Carolina Beach Town Hall). Watch for additional information in the New Year

Message From The Chair
Happy 2013! It is hard to believe we are once again beginning a brand new year. Time flies when you are having fun and we definitely had our share of fun in 2012! And you know what?? We get to do it all over again! It goes without saying that 2012 was a great year for Pleasure Island. We had a great team of volunteers, the quality of the events was second to none and we experienced record attendances. I would like to thank the towns of Carolina Beach and Kure Beach as well as everyone who had a part in making 2012 a record year. 2013 is getting kicked off in high gear with the return of the Step up For
Soldiers Backyard BBQ taking place Jan 25th and 26
th. Last year’s inaugural event was a huge
success with thousands in attendance. This will be a great time for you and your family to come out and support a great organization and enjoy some amazing BBQ! For complete details, please visit the Step Up For Soldiers website www.stepupforsoldiers.org. I am excited about the events planned for this year and I encourage you to get involved. There are numerous opportunities to share your passion and talents within the Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce and we gladly welcome you to share them with us. Be sure to stay up to date on all events and happenings on Pleasure Island by visiting our website www.pleasureislandnc.org.

IN MEMORY OF DORIS EAKES
Doris Eakes, the Grand Lady of Kure Beach passed away on December 27th, 2012, leaving behind a life full of giving and caring for others. She was a philanthropist who focused her efforts on helping children across the World as well as the nurs-es who helped them. Eakes was perhaps best know for starting the Trinity Children Foundation in 2005. The foundations goal was to support charities that help abused and underprivileged children through fundraisers such as her annual motorcycle ride and golf tournament. She also established a charitable truct to provide scholarships for nursing students at three NC colleges. In 2000, Cape Fear Community College named their nursing program after her to honor her commitment to excellence. Pleasure Island has lost a treasure, one of their own.
