Hymn: TiS 427
1. Lord, your word abiding,
and our footsteps guiding,
gives us joy for ever,
binds us all together.
2. Who can tell the pleasure,
who recount the treasure,
by your word imparted
to the simple-hearted?
3. Word of mercy, giving
nourishment for living:
word of life, supplying
comfort for the dying.
4. O that we, discerning
its most holy learning,
Lord, may love and fear you,
evermore be near you.
Henry Williams Baker 1821-77 alt.
Greeting: The Lord be with you.
AND ALSO WITH YOU. (see Ruth 2:4)
Sentence: Will not God grant justice to those who cry to him day and
night? Will he delay long in helping them? Luke 18.7–8

Prayer of Preparation:
As we gather as God's people let us pray together:
Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open,
all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden:
cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,
that we may perfectly love you,
and worthily magnify your holy name,
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Summary of the Commandments:
‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord
your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your
mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first
commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as
yourself.’
Kyrie eleison (How Setting)
5
The Confession
Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's
forgiveness.
Merciful God, our maker and our judge,
we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,
and in what we have failed to do:
we have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves;
we repent, and are sorry for all our sins.
Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you
in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Absolution (Celebrant)
Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to
him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins,
strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
8
Prayer of the Day
Lord, tireless guardian of your people, teach us to rely, day and night, on
your care. Drive us to seek your justice and your help, and support our
prayer lest we grow weary, for in you alone is our strength. We make
our prayer through your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD
Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV)
First Reading: Jeremiah 31.27-34 27
The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will sow the house of
Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of humans and the seed of
animals. 28
And just as I have watched over them to pluck up and break down, to
overthrow, destroy, and bring evil, so I will watch over them to build and to
plant, says the Lord . 29
In those days they shall no longer say:
‘The parents have eaten sour grapes,
and the children’s teeth are set on edge.’ 30
But all shall die for their own sins; the teeth of everyone who eats sour
grapes shall be set on edge. 31
The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new
covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 32
It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I
took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant
that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord . 33
But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after
those days, says the Lord : I will put my law within them, and I will write it on
their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34
No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, ‘Know the
Lord ’, for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says
the Lord ; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more.
Response: Hear the word of the Lord,
THANKS BE TO GOD
9
Psalm 119.97-104
97
Lord, how I love your law:
it is my meditation all the day long.
98
Your commandments have made me wiser than my enemies:
for they remain with me for ever.
99
I have more understanding than all my teachers:
for I study your commands.
100
I am wiser than the aged:
because I have kept your precepts.
101
I have held back my feet from every evil path:
that I might keep your word;
102
I have not turned aside from your judgements:
for you yourself are my teacher.
103
How sweet are your words to my tongue:
sweeter than honey to my mouth.
104
Through your precepts I get understanding:
therefore I hate all lying ways.
10
Second Reading: 2 Timothy 3.10 - 4.5
3 10
Now you have observed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my
faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, 11
my persecutions, and
my suffering the things that happened to me in Antioch, Iconium, and
Lystra. What persecutions I endured! Yet the Lord rescued me from all
of them. 12
Indeed, all who want to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be
persecuted. 13
But wicked people and impostors will go from bad to
worse, deceiving others and being deceived. 14
But as for you, continue
in what you have learned and firmly believed, knowing from whom you
learned it, 15
and how from childhood you have known the sacred
writings that are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ
Jesus. 16
All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for
reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17
so that
everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every
good work. 4 1 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to
judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his
kingdom, I solemnly urge you:2 proclaim the message; be persistent
whether the time is favourable or unfavourable; convince, rebuke, and
encourage, with the utmost patience in teaching. 3 For the time is
coming when people will not put up with sound doctrine, but having
itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their
own desires, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander
away to myths. 5 As for you, always be sober, endure suffering, do the
work of an evangelist, carry out your ministry fully.
Response: Hear the word of the Lord,
THANKS BE TO GOD
11
Gradual Hymn: 213 (ii)
1. Father, whose everlasting love
your only Son for sinners gave,
whose grace to all did freely move,
and sent him down the world to save:
2. help us your mercy to extol,
immense, unfathomed, unconfined;
to praise the Lamb who died for all,
the Saviour of all humankind.
3. Your undistinguishing regard
was cast on Adam's fallen race;
for all you have in Christ prepared
sufficient, sovereign, saving grace.
4. The world he suffered to redeem;
for all he has the atonement made;
for those who will not come to him
the ransom of his life was paid.
5. Arise, O God, maintain your cause!
The fullness of the nations call;
lift up the standard of your cross,
and all shall own you died for all.
Charles Wesley 1707-88 alt.
12
We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel as a sign of respect as we greet
our Lord who is present in His Holy Word.
The Lord be with you
AND ALSO WITH YOU
The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Luke chapter 18
beginning at the 1st
verse.
GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.
1 Then Jesus told them a parable about their need to pray always and not to
lose heart. 2 He said, ‘In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared
God nor had respect for people. 3 In that city there was a widow who kept
coming to him and saying, “Grant me justice against my opponent.” 4 For a
while he refused; but later he said to himself, “Though I have no fear of God
and no respect for anyone, 5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I
will grant her justice, so that she may not wear me out by continually
coming.” ’ 6 And the Lord said, ‘Listen to what the unjust judge says.
7 And
will not God grant justice to his chosen ones who cry to him day and night?
Will he delay long in helping them? 8 I tell you, he will quickly grant justice to
them. And yet, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?’9 He
also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were
righteous and regarded others with contempt: 10
‘Two men went up to the
temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax-collector. 11
The Pharisee,
standing by himself, was praying thus, “God, I thank you that I am not like
other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax-collector. 12
I
fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income.” 13
But the tax-collector,
standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his
breast and saying, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner!” 14
I tell you, this man
went down to his home justified rather than the other; for all who exalt
themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted.’
Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,
PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

The Nicene Creed
Let us together affirm the faith of the Church.
We believe in one God,
the Father, the almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God, begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary
and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge
the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son
is worshipped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
14

Offertory Hymn: TiS 547
Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart,
naught be all else to me, save that thou art;
thou my best thought, by day or by night,
waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.
Be thou my wisdom, be thou my true word,
I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord;
thou my great Father, thy child let me be;
thou in me dwelling, and I with thee one.
Be thou my armour, my sword for the fight;
be thou my dignity, thou my delight;
thou my soul’s shelter and thou my high tower;
raise thou me heavenward, O Power of my power.
Riches I scorn and the world’s empty praise,
thou my inheritance, now and always;
thou and thou only, the first in my heart;
high King of heaven, my treasure thou art.
High King of heaven, after victory won,
may I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
still be my vision, O Ruler of all.
Offertory Prayer: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation.
Through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our
offerings for your glory and for the service of your kingdom.
BLESSED BE GOD FOR EVER.

Final Hymn: TiS 599 (ii)
1. Take my life, and let it be
consecrated, Lord, to thee.
Take my moments and my days,
let them flow in ceaseless praise.
2. Take my hands, and let them move
at the impulse of thy love.
Take my feet, and let them be
swift and beautiful for thee.
3. Take my voice, and let me sing
always, only, for my King.
Take my lips, and let them be
filled with messages from thee.
4. Take my silver and my gold,
nothing, Lord, would I withhold.
Take my intellect, and use
every power as thou shalt choose.
5. Take my will and make it thine;
it shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart, it is thine own;
it shall be thy royal throne.
6. Take my love: my Lord, I pour
at thy feet its treasure-store.
Take myself, and I will be
ever, only, all for thee.
Frances Ridley Havergal 1836-79 alt.
